3 3 Aims Encourage appraisers to re-evaluate and refresh their skills in appraising medical colleagues (from a range of specialties): in the light of feedback they receive on the course and their experience of observing other appraisers

Encourage a consistent and high quality approach to medical appraisal across Scotland Confirm that appraisers are appraising at an appropriate level and, if not, address concerns Consider what further changes to appraisal may be required as a result of revalidation requirements

Tutors role playing appraisees Reviewing videos of your role play appraisals and self critiquing performance

9 9 Three Roles for a challenging appraisal Appraiser – begin by exploring the job the appraisee does and then move into issues flagged up in the Scenario Appraisee – (The tutor) will try to respond naturally to the Appraiser’s interventions Observer – What works well? What could be done differently?

10 Reviewing the video Anyone can ask for the video to be stopped at significant points Explain why you have stopped the video Encourage the appraiser to think about what was going through their minds before they made interventions Give examples of what could be done differently if suggesting a change, or specify what was done well 10
