4 PUNCTUATION Editing for commas in compound sentences Skim the paper, looking only for the seven coordinators: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so If there is a complete sentence on each side of the conjunction, place a comma before it.

5 PUNCTUATION Editing for comma splices Skim the paper, stopping at every comma, See if there is a complete sentence on each side of it. If there is, you have a comma splice.

6 SENTENCES Highlight/underline the first sentence of your essay –Does it compel the reader’s attention? –Will it make me want to continue reading?

7 Choose several paragraphs, and draw lines at the end of each sentence. –Are your sentences nearly all the same length? If so, change this! –Look at the first word of each sentence. Is there variety in how they start? Remember: NTSSWSW in the same ¶ SENTENCES

8 Check sentence openings –Circle any sentence that begins with: This is/These are/These were. –Watch out for repetitive use of “This shows, This reveals” and other such phrases. Use variety! SENTENCES

9 Scan your essay for repetitious word choices and overused words –Avoid these words: very, really, thing –Look for weak verbs. Replace them, when appropriate, with more accurate, strong verbs. SENTENCES

10 DIALOGUE If two people are speaking, you should start a new paragraph each time the speaker changes. For easy reference, look in a work of fiction and format your text similarly. Long quote (4+ lines)? Be sure to make it a block quote. Indent the entire passage 10 spaces.

12 Examine your conclusion –Don’t begin with “Finally,” “In conclusion.” –Does your conclusion introduce new material or ideas? (it shouldn’t) –Does your conclusion explore the significance of the subculture and/or how your preconceived notions were confirmed or disaffirmed? (it should) –Does the final sentence give the reader something to think about or end in some other strong, purposeful way? (it should) CONCLUSION
