2 UNECE UN/CEFACT Background (1981/82)  In 1981 4 major groups working within the Port of Hamburg (Forwarder, Liner Agent, Tally and Quay Operator) agreed upon the following: o Efficient organization of transportion needs early information  information exchange using EDI  avoids double typing,  avoids errors due to double typing  saves time and  saves money o Flow of information within the Harbour was too slow and too expensive

4 UNECE UN/CEFACT  Setup of a committee  Identification of the first Business Cases: Quay Order and B/L  Engagement of an external advisor: o “Write the concept!” o “Take into account the existing IT-Structure of the acting parties!”  First investment: One year time for seven people to design and develop Quay Order and B/L and to start the first pilot! Design and development process

5 UNECE UN/CEFACT  Starting from the scratch: No standards available at that time!  Successful start of the first pilot in 1982!  1983 enlargement of the pilot to more companies: DAKOSY going alive!  Next Business Cases followed soon: o Transport Order Rail o Customs Declaration o Dangerous Goods Announcement o …. Design and development process

Convert-Services)  ASP-Services o DAKOSY developed various applications designed especially for the demands of  Forwarder, Liner Agents, Quay Operator, Customs Broker, Rail Operator, Trucking Companies o DAKOSY developed and operates also various applications for the public sector regarding eg. Export Monitoring and Dangerous Cargo Surveillance o All applications have a strong EDI-component!

17 UNECE UN/CEFACT Business model  Shareholders to pay a yearly fee for the so called „traditionell EDI-Business within the port - community“  Each participant has to sign a contract with one of the shareholders and has to pay to them for the usage of the EDI-Network of DAKOSY  Additional services of DAKOSY (EDI, ASP and IT- Services) are charged by DAKOSY directly

19 UNECE UN/CEFACT Lessons learned  90 % Talking, 10 % Doing  Most important: All people to tow one rope in the same direction!  “Eat the elephant piece by piece”  If we were to start again, we would do it the same way!!
