William Golding describes a major theme of Lord of the Flies as “an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature”

Golding’s personal philosophy about the nature of humans and evil changed during the war-came to believe that “man was sick—not exceptional man, but average man”

Lord of the Flies was partly written as a response to a popular boys’ novel by R.M. Ballantyne, The Coral Island, in which three shipwrecked boys live together happily on an island until they are rescued.

Golding believed that human nature would not result in such a harmonious existence-stripped of civilization’s social environment, human beings would return to a savage state ruled by fear and the basic desire for survival.

Golding published Lord of the Flies in 1954. Over the next 10 years, he published four more novels, many dealing with the moral flaws of human nature. Golding received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983
