3 Describe the role and the vision on the NSW Attorney General’s Department  The department of Attorney General and Justice assists the NSW Government, Judiciary, Parliament  It does this by helping the community to protect human rights and with that the standards of the community, and also to reduce crime and promote peace.  The Department plays a key role in the administration and development of a just and equitable legal system in NSW.  The department assists and supports the NSW Attorney General.  The Attorney General is chief of law and the first officer

5 Explain the role of the Attorney General  The role of the Attorney General is to advise the Government and Cabinet on legal, constitutional and legal policy issues.  The Attorney General must ensure the administration of justice is: fair and efficient, consistent in the level and nature of penalties imposed under the law, observes the rules of natural justice and preserves civil liberties.  The Attorney also advises the Premier, Cabinet and other Ministers on legal questions for his opinion.  When giving his opinion, the Attorney General must take into account the legal advice of the Solicitor General, Crown Advocate, Crown Solicitor or the department if provided.  The Attorney General is also responsible for the appointment of judges, magistrates and statutory officers in New South Wales.

6 What is Jury Duty? Is it important?  Jury Duty is an essential role in our justice system that allows members of the community to play an important part in the administration of justice.  Traditionally, a jury is made up of 12, NSW citizens that have been randomly chosen from the electoral rolls. They are issued with a notice of Inclusion that lets them know that they may be chosen to be part of the jury.

7 How does this department help assist disabled persons in accessing the law?  The Department of Attorney General & Justice protects the rights of people with a disability.  The agencies work to ensure they are understood and respected.  They work towards minimizing disadvantages faced by individuals with a disability. They work to ensure people with disabilities can access the court services fairly.  The Department of Attorney General & Justice developed a Disability Strategic Plan 2010- 2012. This plan will improve the way disability services are delivered

8 How does this department help assist people from different backgrounds in accessing the law  The Department of Justice and Attorney General values the diversity of cultures, languages, and religions of the citizens of NSW.  Their aim is to improve services through community consultation, education, communication and participation.  The Department continues to identify the barriers faced by people with different backgrounds and investigate different ways to further improve services to make them more flexible and user-friendly.

9 Evaluation  Yes because the information is extensive and contains appropriate links to informative websites that lead to a extended knowledge in the law department  The addition of interactive information and if possible videos explaining the information.  A frequently asked questions page may aid in the process of receiving information easier  It is extremely useful to disabled people as it displays their rights and interest in a clear concise way in hope their legal proceedings will be as equally fair as non disabled people
