Meiosis Making Sperm and Eggs

Vocabulary  You get half your chromosomes from your mom and half from your dad--these pairs are called homologous.  A cell that contains a complete set of chromosomes is called diploid (2N).  Sperm/eggs have a single set of chromosomes, they are called haploid (1N).  You get half your chromosomes from your mom and half from your dad--these pairs are called homologous.  A cell that contains a complete set of chromosomes is called diploid (2N).  Sperm/eggs have a single set of chromosomes, they are called haploid (1N).

Meiosis: process that cuts the number of chromosomes in a diploid cell in half Meiosis I  Interphase I:chromosomes replicate  Prophase I: each chromosome pairs with its homologous chromosome to form a tetrad  Metaphase I: Tetrads line up in the middle of the cell  Anaphase I: Tetrads separate, homologous chromosomes pulled to opposite sides of the cell  Result: Two (unique) diploid daughter cells Meiosis I  Interphase I:chromosomes replicate  Prophase I: each chromosome pairs with its homologous chromosome to form a tetrad  Metaphase I: Tetrads line up in the middle of the cell  Anaphase I: Tetrads separate, homologous chromosomes pulled to opposite sides of the cell  Result: Two (unique) diploid daughter cells

Meiosis II  Prophase II: chromosomes do not replicate again  Metaphase II: chromosomes line up in the middle of the cells  Anaphase II: Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell  Telophase II: Membranes form = four haploid daughter cells  Prophase II: chromosomes do not replicate again  Metaphase II: chromosomes line up in the middle of the cells  Anaphase II: Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell  Telophase II: Membranes form = four haploid daughter cells

Mitosis/Meiosis Poster  Mitosis Poster: copy figure 10-5 (page 246-247) IN COLOR (make sure the chromosomes are the correct/accurate colors)  Copy the CARTOON cells  Label each stage and copy the caption for what is going on ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE  Meiosis Poster: copy figure 11-15 (page 276-277) IN COLOR (make sure the chromosomes are the correct/accurate colors)  Label each stage and copy the caption for what is going on DUE THURSDAY  Mitosis Poster: copy figure 10-5 (page 246-247) IN COLOR (make sure the chromosomes are the correct/accurate colors)  Copy the CARTOON cells  Label each stage and copy the caption for what is going on ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE  Meiosis Poster: copy figure 11-15 (page 276-277) IN COLOR (make sure the chromosomes are the correct/accurate colors)  Label each stage and copy the caption for what is going on DUE THURSDAY
