DESIGN AND PREPARATION OF POSTERS FOR CONFERENCES ©DAVID LINDSAY
2
The Principles The poster has one purpose: to entice someone to talk to you The audience is not captive. You have to attract it It is not to supply detailed information or to present a paper
3
The four objectives for a good poster It must: 1.catch the eye. 2.make a statement that arouses the scientific interest of a participant in the passing audience. 3.provide justification in the form of data. 4.stimulate the onlooker to find out more by talking with the author.
4
Catching the eye: It must stop the passing delegate and make him/her take a second (or third) look You have about 2 seconds to do this
5
Arousing scientific interest: You have about 10 seconds to stimulate scientific interest
6
Providing some data as justification This is in the form of data or statements of detail that elaborate briefly on the primary information that the delegate has already perceived You have between 30 to 60 seconds to do this
7
Talking to the delegate An interested delegate will begin asking questions It is over to you now. You have the whole of the rest of the meeting to talk about your work Congratulations!!
8
Constructing the poster: 1.Catching the eye Use –Large font –Colour –Photographs –A clever title –Your imagination to convince the reader to look more closely Don’t use –Pasted pages of text –Stereotype titles like Introduction, Material and Methods, Results etc. –Small font –More than 60 seconds of material
9
Constructing the poster: 2.Creating scientific interest Summarise your most important conclusions into what can be read in 10 seconds Make this information the most prominent feature of your poster apart from its title It can be in the form of prominent headings or two or three well placed sentences
10
Constructing the poster: 3.Providing justification Use only your best data (category 1) Present them in the most attractive and concise form (graphs, tables or well chosen text) Do not let the information for justification overshadow the information that you used to attract attention
11
Constructing the poster: 4.The talking phase This is the reason for the poster..so.. Prepare what you might say Prepare for questions Have a copy of a written paper if you wish Have copies of other papers you have prepared in case the conversation broadens Make sure the delegate gets your address for further contact.

Let’s compare a good and a bad poster
