1 Towards No Drug Use (TND) Program Description  Project TND: A series of 12 lessons implemented in all high schools  25 teachers from 14 high schools reported using TND in 2007-08, reaching approximately 2,779 students Evaluation Design  Pretests administered to students before first lesson  Posttests administered 30 days after last lesson  Teacher survey

2 Evaluation of TND Program Student Survey Administration  Evaluation with student surveys Fall and Spring semesters  Survey Indicators:  Knowledge (e.g., of selected topics covered in TND)  Attitudes towards alcohol and drug use  Actual alcohol and drug use behavior (in the past 30 days).  Sample size:  1,032 pretests and 881 posttests collected  Surveys from 46 classes at 10 schools

3 Student Survey – Key Findings Statistically Significant Changes 1.Knowledge Increased  0.83 items (out of 4) correct at pretest  1.23 items correct at posttest 2.Perceived Peer Disapproval of Alcohol Increased  55.7% at pretest vs. 61.5% at posttest reported that their friends disapproved of them for using alcohol 3.Perceived Risk of Harm Increased  70.4% at pretest vs. 73.0% at posttest reported it was harmful to use alcohol every once in a while

4 Student Survey – Key Findings Positive Changes, but Not Statistically Significant 1.Perceived Risk of Harm Increased  93.5% at pretest vs. 94.5% at posttest reported that frequent (daily or almost daily) alcohol use was harmful to their health 2.Attitudes Toward Use of Alcohol Changed as Desired  83.0% at pretest vs. 85.7% at posttest reported that it was wrong of high school students to use alcohol frequently 3.Perceived Peer Disapproval of Marijuana  63.2% at pretest vs. 65.7% at posttest reported that their friends disapproved of them for using marijuana
