Bell Quiz

Objectives Evaluate and compare algebraic expressions.

Evaluating and Comparing Algebraic Expressions Any expression containing only numbers and operations is a numeric expression. An algebraic expression is an expression with variables and/or numbers that use operations (e.g. +, –, x, or ÷).

Example 1 Evaluating Algebraic Expressions Evaluate the expression when x = 3 and a = 1. 3x – 4x + ax

Lesson Practice Evaluate the expression for the given values. 3x – 4b + 2bx; x = 10, b = 2

Example 2 Converting Units of Area Evaluate the expression when y = 2 and z = 4. 3(z – y) 2 – 4y 3

Lesson Practice Evaluate the expression for the given values. 2ab – 4a 2 + 10; a = –1, b = 8

Example 3 Application: Converting Units of Volume Compare the expressions when a = 4 and b = 3. Use, or =. ○ 3a 2 + 2b – 4b 3 2a2b22a2b2

Lesson Practice Compare the expressions when x = 2 and y = 5. Use, or =. ○ (6x 2 + y 3 ) – 3x 6 8x 4 – y 3

Example 4 Foreign Travel: Converting Units of Currency A cell phone company charges a $20 monthly fee and then 45 cents per minute. The company uses the expression 20 + 0.45m to find the total amount to charge for each month. How much would the company charge for 200 minutes?

Lesson Practice The lowest recorded temperature is – 89.4°C in Antarctica. The expression 9/5C + 32 can be used to convert Celsius measurements to Fahrenheit. What is the lowest recorded temperature in degrees Fahrenheit?
