3 Ephesians 5 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

4 Ephesians 4-5 New life in Christ Not rules but a direction… Radically different from society + culture “Let no one deceive you… Once you were darkness now in the Lord you are light” Ephesians warns/encourages Christians to imitate God

5 Wisdom “Look carefully then how you walk… not as unwise but as wise. Not foolish… but understand. But drunk… but filled with the Spirit”. Wise/wisdom!

6 What is wisdom? Wisdom is not about gaining intellectual knowledge as much as how we are oriented toward values that God approves. (Charles Cousar) Obedience to the teachings of God… being loyal to his cause in everyday situations… Wisdom is what makes us able to face life… make sense of its mysteries… and overcome its problems. Who we are… How we walk through life How much do we teach this???

7 Where is wisdom? Jewish wisdom tradition – Proverbs – Job – Ecclesiastes – Sirach + Wisdom of Solomon (included in Bible of early Christian church) Outside Bible? – Egyptian and West Asian – Greek and Roman

8 Where is wisdom? Bible is first We can use wisdom of past (and present?) "So Christians today must include the wisdom of our time into how we think about ethics" (Perkins) Key difference = What is the will of God? Christian thinkers found the classical moral tradition congenial and the philosophical framework at least in its general outline remained mostly intact in Christian writers. Yet there were changes... Christians adapted and changed what they received. (Robert Louis Wilken)

9 What about worship? Wisdom // Holy Spirit // Worship "Worshiping God and the blessings of his presence in the Spirit are the keys to wisdom" (Perkins) Perhaps Holy Spirit holds together wisdom and worship? (RW)
