Inventory of radioactive sources present in the cavern at pit 8 Gloria Corti Experimental Area Meeting 05 August 2008

LHCb Experimental Area Meeting - 05 August 2008Gloria Corti Page 2 HCAL sources  Hadron CALorimeter uses 2 137 Cs sources for calibration one per half detector  gamma sources: nº4145RP (330 MBq) and nº4146RP (300 MBq)  Notice at PZ85 and PM85 of presence of sources in UX85-B with map indicating location of garages garage on floor of electronics platform on top of HCAL, source blocked inside  UX85-B conventional area when source in garage (≤ 0.5 µSv/h at 40 cm)

LHCb Experimental Area Meeting - 05 August 2008Gloria Corti Page 3 HCAL sources  EDMS 917876: safety manual and operational procedure for scan  Calibration scan announced at least 48 hours in advance and notices in PZ85 and PM85  take place from 21:00 in the evening to 7:00 in the morning  Flashing panels bottom of Calorimeters stairs and top of gantry at exit of source(s)  UX85-B is a supervised area during scan for incident if source would stop during scan  Measurements confirm UX85-C is not classified AD6 HCAL platform  Maximum dose rate measured = 116 µSv/h  Total integrated dose = 1.31 µSv. AD6 Cryo area  Maximum dose rate measured: 0.37 µSv/h  Total integrated dose: 0.2 µSv. RESPONSIBLE: Rustem Dzhelyadin

LHCb Experimental Area Meeting - 05 August 2008Gloria Corti Page 4 OT sources  OT uses 3 x 90 Sr source + 1 55 Fe for irradiation and scanning  gas quality and chamber response  beta sources: no. 4251RP(27 MBq)–4298RP(70MBq)–4299RP(70MBq), X-ray: no. 3398RP (9MBq) 2828/U1-A06 (6.0 x 4.0 m2) RADIOACTIVE SOURCE position when used in the room ROOM DETAILS UX85 - LOCALIZATION OF RADIOACTIVE SOURCES AT 2828/U1-A06 SAFE where the sources are stored when not used. Sources kept in a safe in a locked room in UX85-A Panel on the door One beta source used in the room for gas quality with small panel

LHCb Experimental Area Meeting - 05 August 2008Gloria Corti Page 5 OT sources EDMS 942795: safety manual and operational procedure for scan on OT frame EDMS in preparation for irradiation on pillar Signs in place before installation of source, 2 OT halves chambers open RESPONSIBLE: Antonio Pellegrino

LHCb Experimental Area Meeting - 05 August 2008Gloria Corti Page 6 Muon source  MUON uses 1 241 Am for gas quality  alpha and low energy gamma  At the moment in gas building on the surface, will be moved in UX85-A in 2828/U1-A06  EMDS 886019: Safety manual and operation procedure  kept in a safe, panel when in use RESPONSIBLE: Burkhard Schmidt

LHCb Experimental Area Meeting - 05 August 2008Gloria Corti Page 7 DELPHI sources  432 241 Am sources (alpha) in HPC module of the Electromagnetic Barrel Calorimeter – Not accessible  no. 2946RP, 3.2 MBq on 16.10.1987  Responsible Gloria Corti  24 55Fe in TPC of Delphi – Not accessible  2909-2925RP 370 MBq on 03.09.1987  2929-2934RP, 2936RP, 2.41 MBq on 12.02.2007  Responsible Philippe Charpentier
