Multidisciplinary Team-Based Design Education to Create Biomedical Engineering Innovators Jay R. Goldberg, PhD, PE BMEidea Meeting October 12, 2011

Introduction 15% of capstone design projects are student- generated. 1 29% of capstone design courses include manufacturing topics. 1 Most capstone design courses (and design curricula) ignore front end (needs finding/problem identification) and back end (design transfer) of the design process 1. S. Howe, Adv. Engr. Edu., 2005

Biomedical Engineering Design Program at Marquette University Design Phases (ISO 9001) Design and Development Planning Design InputDesign OutputDesign Verification and Validation Design Transfer Design Phases (Curricula) Problem IDProject Definition Customer Needs Target Specs. 4 Planned Program Enhancements 1.Create new 3 credit course in junior year (Medical Device Design) – Combine with needs finding course – Shift several capstone design topics into junior year; students learn topics earlier instead of just-in-time – Allow for deeper coverage of topics (>1 lecture), more guest speakers – Smaller class size in junior year will allow more interactive learning and active learning exercises

Planned Program Enhancements 2.Add design transfer and commercialization phases – Design for manufacturing – Assembly – Serviceability/maintainability – Entrepreneurship

Planned Program Enhancements 3. Funding – More funding for design projects More non-sponsored student-generated projects More assistive technology projects – Development of teaching modules Industrial design Entrepreneurship Business basics Regulatory issues – More guest speakers

Unique Features Expands coverage to include all phases of design – better prepares students for careers – nurtures entrepreneurship among students develops needs finding skills encourages student-generated projects improves entrepreneurship education

Strengthens collaborations with partners – Marquette University Dental School College of Business Administration College of Communication – Medical College of Wisconsin – Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design – Froedtert Lutheran Memorial Hospital – Milwaukee Center for Independence Unique Features

Thank you to NIH/NIBIB The project described is supported by Award Number R25EB013070 from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.
