Algebra 1 18 Oct 2011 1) Put papers from your group folder into your binder. 2) Put your binder, hw and text on your desk. CHECK YOUR HOMEWORK CHECK YOUR HOMEWORK √ or X your answers √ or X your answers Warm-up: silently Set up and solve Set up and solve Don’t forget to show steps and check! 1.2. 36 is 17% of what number? 3. 57 is what percent of 45? 4. finished? do Improving your visual thinking skills pg. 113

Objective Content: Students will convert measurement units. Language: Students will take notes and use think-pair-share.

Homework due today pg. 111: 1, 4, 5 √ if correct; X if incorrect for each problem (10 pts) Homework due next class pg. 112: 7 and 8

How fast are you going? How tall are you in cm?

have you ever visited another country? 25 pesos— is that a good price? 180 kph— how fast is that in mph?

CW: investigation pg. 108 FINISH CALCULATING YOUR Ratio decimal OBJECTmeasurement in cm measurement in inches RATIO cm: in RATIO decimal

pg. 109 Step 4- Ratio of cm:in = ? Step 5: all students: think- pair- share USE A TABLE to help you set up proportion Step 6: advanced students finished? 1) do pg. 108 step 2 on calculator- see me 2) look at example B on page 109 DO page 111: #3 2.54 cm is 1 inch WRITE in your CW: explain the meaning of this ratio

practice using conversion factors Set up and solve using the following format: UNITS | proportion | work | check 1. How many liters does a 14.5 gallon gas tank hold if 1 gallon ≈ 3.78 liters? 2. How tall is a 64 inch student (5 ft. 4 in.) in centimeters if 1 inch ≈ 2.54 cm? 3. How tall are YOU in centimeters?

word problems 1) Jonas drove his car from Montana to Canada on vacation. While there, he needed to buy gasoline and noticed it was sold by the liter instead of by the gallon. Use the conversion factor (ratio) 1 gallon ≈ 3.79 liters to find out how many liters he needs to fill his 12.5 gallon tank. 2) Work on your handout- Listen for groups Complete your handout for homework

RATE- a ratio with a 1 in the denominator examples: 50 miles per hour (per 1 hour) 25 points per game (in one game) 35 calories per ounce (in 1 ounce) 20 feet per second (in 1 second)

dimension analysis To change feet per second to miles per hour, we can do a “chain” of conversions. WRITE YOUR UNITS!!! Use conversion factors to make “ones” by canceling units: Cancel units that are in the numerator and denominator (ANYTHING divided by ITSELF = 1)

debrief what did you learn today about converting measurements? What is a “conversion factor”? Do you have enough information to figure out how fast 180 kph is in mph?
