GENERAL OUTLINE Bernardo Adeva Andany / USC Madrid CSIC May, 19 2011 LHCb project2 — What have we done in our previous LHCb project build, install, coordinate and operate the LHCb Silicon Tracker (300K channels) perform two major LHCb analysis results in 2010 — What do we plan to do in the next 3 years in LHCb 1st objective: to create (consolidate) a reference analysis group in LHCb at Santiago 2nd objective: to realize a main contribution to the LHCb upgrade in the VELO detector and keep Santiago contribution at highest level in instrumentation

Bernardo Adeva Andany / USC Madrid CSIC May, 19 2011 LHCb project4 SANTIAGO CONTRIBUTION TO LHCb CONSTRUCTION Silicon Tracker (300K channels) = Inner Tracker (low angle LHC)+ TT (vertical) Santiago responsibility (in full accord with TDR): — 50% assembly of Inner Tracker stations (IT) — Design+construction of Control Electronics of whole ST — HV and LV services (ST) — coordination of slow control under PVSS (ST) 25% overall contribution to LHCb Silicon Tracker (800 KCHF Santiago contribution to capital investment) Other partners: U. Zurich, U. Lausanne (LPHE), U. Heidelberg Project Leader of LCHb Silicon Tracker: Abraham Gallas Torreira (RyC from USC) from Januay 2011, for 2 years. Previous Deputy Coordinator. A great recognition to Santiago. Complete success of ST with first LHCb data taking in 2010 and 2011 : — no broken bonds IT — efficiency and momentum resolution as expected — particle multiplicities under control — operation at 50 ns perfectly OK (very recent from Abraham) — some ageing observed, compatible with expectations

5 B S µµ A MAJOR LHC ACHIEVEMENT First international presentation of this main LHCb result by Diego Martínez Santos at Moriond EW 2011 on March, 17 2011. 3 years of work by the Santiago group under project FPA2008-03076 José A. Hernando Morata (USC) co-coordinator of Bs µµ WG. A high priority LHCb objective for 2010-2012, with new physics potential

Bernardo Adeva Andany / USC Madrid CSIC May, 19 2011 LHCb project7 CREATION OF A REFERENCE ANALYSIS GROUP IN LHCb Our first main goal for this project is to consolidate an analysis team in Santiago that LHCb can trust for any CP-violation analysis to come. — Reinforce our contribution and steer in the following years the B s,d µµ analysis, up to the Standard Model limit — Study Bs VV where V=light neutral vector mesons (K *0, Ф …) probe SM in b s transitions 4 –charged particles, separation even/odd CP-amplitudes quark operators in penguins, chirality between 2nd and 3rd generations We are a strong group doing analysis (3 senior, 2+1 postdocs, 3 students). Our people have: the expertise, the talent, the means (TIER3/TIER2), a reputation in the collaboration (a strong contibution so far : 2 out of 5 first b-physics papers of LHCb) Need frequent travel to CERN to analysis meetings and specific workshops. Students STEERING POSTDOC senior physicists We need the means to engage and train THE BEST young physicists

Bernardo Adeva Andany / USC Madrid CSIC May, 19 2011 LHCb project8 MOTIVATION OF LHCb UPGRADE b and c quarks appear virtually in loops. Any direct observations of new particles at LHC would have effects on b and c processes and the different sizes of such effects would tell us much about the nature of the new particles. Because of its flexible trigger, after being upgraded, LHCb can explore many other phenomena in the forward direction, and can adjust the physics explores by adjusting the trigger. we consider LHCb as a General Purpose detector for the forward direction. The only experiment that can look for “exotic” processes in 2 < <6 and at low pT. e. g. “Hidden Valley” decays of the Higgs boson into two neutral scalar objects (bb, long lifetimes). Not likely to be accesible by ATLAS or CMS. we list 5 processes where more precision will be crucial. Recent accomplishments by LHCb (B ) : K + -, + -, K + K - very competitive statistics 4 new decay modes found : B s D* 2 µ, Bs f0, b c D s, B s K *0 K *0 the latter discovered by Santiago, and quite promising for precision CP-violation CERN/LHCC 2011-001 LHCb LoI yet submitted to LHCC

Bernardo Adeva Andany / USC Madrid CSIC May, 19 2011 LHCb project9 ADVISABILITY OF LHCb UPGRADE FOR SANTIAGO WE NEED : to keep our strong position in detector instrumentation to pursue our objectives in flavor physics to the end to pass over our technical expertise, even if key engineers are lost to prepare for physics beyond LHCb and learn at maximum from its experience, for the benefit of the whole community

Bernardo Adeva Andany / USC Madrid CSIC May, 19 2011 LHCb project10 USC PARTICIPATION IN LHCb UPGRADE VELO DETECTOR LAYOUT Full detector has 26 stations. The modules on either side of the beam are staggered to create overlap regions. This layout has been simulated to be fully efficient (4 hit /track) in the LHCb acceptance 250x300 mrad. probably the most ambitious micro-vertex FORWARD detector ever built in particle physics

Gallas GICSERV (NGG): NGG-233 Santiago very well received in the VELO upgrade collaboration — sensor tiles: made of 3 readout ASICs on a single sensor, with guard ring of 500 um — 2 sensor tiles are mounted on opposite sides of the substrate — substrate choices: Diamond: excellent mechanical and thermal properties low mass Carbon fibre/TPG or Al/TPG

12 USC PARTICIPATION IN LHCb UPGRADE – HIGH SPEED LINK Area 1 Area 2 Area 3 Male-female miniature connectors SMC connectors Daniel Esperante Layout development (USC): High speed link prototype — Readout speed is a concern in current high-density pixel detectors since effective data Tx rate goes above Gbits. Typical issues: zero suppresion needed in the chip local copper interface to a high speed optical link — Problems to face: skin effect in conductor and dielectric losses control the cable mechanical parameters to achieve the desired performance signal compensation needed if distances above several tens of cm USC activity (with J. Buytaert) — Build prototype cable to assess the performance of a high-speed flex cable ‘Pyralux ® AP-PLUS from Dupont — Study high frequency behavior of different configurations with network analyser as well as radiation hardness Area1 : to study parameters of coupled differential lines Area2 : to study parameters of decoupled strip-lines Area3 : to place a miniature fine pitch connector and test a Tx line with the connector

PARTICIPATION IN SiPMTs DEVELOPMENT FOR NEXT 100 Bernardo Adeva Andany / USC Madrid CSIC May, 19 2011 LHCb project21 NEXT : is an international collaboration to built a 100 kg enriched Xe TPC to search for neutrinoless double beta decay. The detector has a SOFT design: The energy of the double beta decay is measured with 1% FWHM resolution thanks to high presure PMTs. The electrons are tracked thanks to the measurement of the t0 from primary scintillation, and the position thanks to a SiPMTs plane. The Collaboration plans to built a full 100 kg detector by 2013, to be installed at Canfranc Underground Laboratory. The Conceptual Design Report has been recently approved. The collaboration is funded by the Consollider CUP (Canfranc Underground Physics) USC signed CUP (J.A. Hernando) USC has contributed to the characterization of the SiPMs and to the software and analysis. USC plans to built 1/4 of the SiPMs boards needed for NEXT 100. That requires the installation of a setup at USC and be in close contact with the main institute responsible of the SiPMs plane, IFIC (Valencia)
