8 History – Control of Israel 2. Ottoman Empire (Islamic) rules the region– 1520-1922 - The Ottomans were a Muslim empire the originated in Turkey. - During their time in power, the Muslim population in Israel greatly increased.

10 4. UN Partition Plan, 1947 - This map shows how the United Nations partitioned Palestine/Israel into two different countries. - The city of Jerusalem was taken over by the United Nations. - Jordan, Syria, Egypt, and Palestine immediately attacked Israel after this was set up.

11 5. Arab-Israeli War, 1948 Israel calls it the War of Independence Palestinians call it the Catastrophe The United Nations partitions (divides) Israel into two separate countries. One for the Jews and one for the Palestinians. No one is happy  Britain leaves the region and the Palestinians with the help of other Arab Nations nearby immediately attack Israel to drive them out of Israel. READ ONLY

12 6. The Six Days War - Using money and military supplies purchased from the US, the Israelis defeat Jordan, Syrian, Palestinian, and Egyptian forces. Israelis gain: 1. Sinai Peninsula 2. Golan Heights  Suez Canal (on Sinai Peninsula) is a major chokepoint = $$  Golan Heights = valuable WATER supply

13 Yom Kippur War (October), 1973 Egypt takes back the Sinai Peninsula, Syria regains portions of the Golan Heights but many water supplies are still controlled by Israel.
