2 DCS’S Substance Abuse Programme The Rehabilitation Unit  Goal of Unit Empowerment of clients to enable their smooth re-entry into the society.

3 Programmes Available  Vocational  Counseling  Life skills  Academic

4 Life Skills Areas to be covered:  Anger management  Sexuality  Self esteem  Family Life & Spirituality  Literacy  Entrepreneurship

5 DATA  46 % of inmates are substance abusers  11.2 % of current inmate population is incarcerated on drug related charges

6 The Programme  Has been in gestation stage since 2004  Is being developed with the assistance of OAS & NCDA  Target group is all inmates serving 1-3 years & all juvenile offenders  Pilot to be carried out at T.S.A.C.C.

7 Why T.S.A.C.C.?  Population composition  Physical infrastructure  Location  Life Skills Programme also to be piloted there

8 Project Goal  To prevent and minimize the incidence of Substance Abuse and provide a Treatment and Rehabilitation Support System for custodial clients of the DCS

9 Project Objectives  To establish a Project Management Committee  To conduct a Situational Analysis Exercise  Use findings of Situation Analysis to design training programme  Conduct designed training programme - 3 mths.

10 Project Objectives  Plan intervention strategies to prevent/minimize the incidence of Substance Abuse and provide a treatment & rehabilitation support system

11 Expected Outcomes  Situational Needs Analysis Survey  Development of an individual assessment tool  Development of Treatment, Monitoring &Evaluation protocol

12 Expected Outcomes  Greater collaboration and communication among treatment providers—drug court, Patricia House, Salvation Army, etc  Integration of existing adjunctive services  Quality assurance, Research & Monitoring
