1 5 P’s of Patering 1 Corinthians 4:12-17

2 Father’s Day On Mother’s Day On Father’s Day
Sweet thoughts, kind words Sermon blesses mothers On Father’s Day Strong, “shame on you” Sermon clubs them over the head “Pater” = Greek word for “father” Today – 5 P’s important to being a father

3 1 – Prayer Kids need to know that you:
Honor God in your life Show gratitude – meal time Pray about important matters Live like a Christian 1 Corinthians 4:12 - And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure;

4 1 – Prayer 1 Corinthians 4:15 - For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Children need and look for spiritual leadership from their father

5 2 – Patience Challenge and urge your kids to do their best
But don’t demand perfection You aren’t. Why demand it of them? Proverbs 19:11 - The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, And his glory is to overlook a transgression. Our reaction can do more damage than the infraction.

6 3 – Play Kids must learn social skills
They learn through play Sharing toys Play by the rules Lose / Win with honor Can’t change rules as you go Take them fishing, hunting, kick a ball, swing, slide, play catch

7 4 – Praise There is power in acceptance - tell them they did good
Ephesians 6:4 - And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. Be more positive than negative Like a bank account – deposit more than you withdraw

8 5 – Purpose Husbands cannot abdicate leadership
There are many demands on our time Work, social, personal, church Recreation, home, marriage Ecclesiastes 3:1 – To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:

9 Legacies are Forever Stuff doesn’t matter – kids do
Stuff can get lost, broken, replaced A spiritual legacy will last past your lifetime Honor your father for his leadership, sacrifice, dedication, and provision for the family.

10 Conclusion We should honor our fathers for all that they have done, provided We should honor them for their example of spiritual leadership We should follow them as they follow Christ 1 Corinthians 11:1 - Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
