Interpreting Visual Information CCSS RI.4.7- Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (gramps, charts, diagrams) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.

What are some places or books that we might see visual displays?

Read this text and then look at the bar graph. Think about how the information it shows adds to what the text is telling you.

Now look at this table. It brings together facts from the text and the graph. Using all the information provided to you, within the text and the graph, it gives you a pretty good idea of what a fish tank looks like. Most informational text will have visual displays. Studying them and understanding them will help you fully understand the text.

Let’s look at this passage about the ocean floor. Pay close attention to the diagram as well. The passage says both ocean ridges and seamounts rise from the ocean floor. Look at both of these on the diagram. What differences can you find according to the diagram that the passage did not tell us?

Continue reading about the ocean floor. Diagrams often provide us with information that the text does not. Let’s find one thing the diagram tells us that the text does not.

Respond in your literacy journal. Why is it important to pay close attention to diagrams, graphs or other visual displays that come with any of the passages you read?

Read the following passage. Then answer the questions that follow.

Applying our knowledge. Respond in your literacy journal. Hint: The text tells you which zone has animals with soft bodies and no eyes. The diagram lists some animals that live in that zone. You can put that information together. Hint: Make sure your choice is related to the depths of the three zones.

Applying our knowledge. Respond in your literacy journal. Hint: It’s true that the passage refers to plants and animals. But how specific does the passage get about these life- forms? Where can you find more specific information?

Read the article that was given to you. Then answer these questions in your Literacy Journal. Pay close attention to the details!
