3. Read this text and then look at the bar graph. Think about how the information it shows adds to what the text is telling you.

4. Now look at this table. It brings together facts from the text and the graph. Using all the information provided to you, within the text and the graph, it gives you a pretty good idea of what a fish tank looks like. Most informational text will have visual displays. Studying them and understanding them will help you fully understand the text.

5. Let’s look at this passage about the ocean floor. Pay close attention to the diagram as well. The passage says both ocean ridges and seamounts rise from the ocean floor. Look at both of these on the diagram. What differences can you find according to the diagram that the passage did not tell us?

6. Continue reading about the ocean floor. Diagrams often provide us with information that the text does not. Let’s find one thing the diagram tells us that the text does not.

7. Respond in your literacy journal. Why is it important to pay close attention to diagrams, graphs or other visual displays that come with any of the passages you read?
