1 Graphic Organizers Use of Graphic organizers in Art Education

2 What is the big deal with Visual Representation? “Currently as the population and needs of students grow more diverse, there is a greater need for visual tools to be used as additional augmentative tools for effective teaching intervention. It is through visualizing important concepts and facts that students build knowledge bases.” (Ben-David 2002) A common visual representation is the graphic organizer.

3 What is a Graphic Organizer? It is a visual and graphic display that depicts the relationship between facts, terms and or ideas within a learning task. (Strangman, Hall and Meyer 2003) Some examples of Graphic organizers include Venn diagrams, concept maps, webs and cycle maps.

4 Why Use Graphic Organizers? Graphic organizers help students to enhance and expand the information and promote higher order thinking skills. Organizers help students to better comprehend and understand complex learning materials and concepts. Organizers help facilitate long term retention. (Gil-Garcia and Villegas 2003)
