1. Who needs to take Friday’s Quiz? 2. Prepare for today’s IB Assessment by taking out a pencil and clean sheet of notebook paper. 3. DEAR

 Criterion B: Investigating Patterns  Use what you know about tables, graphs, and equations to COMPLETELY answer today’s IB assessment.  Use FORMAL language  Be CLEAR, CONCISE, and CONVINCING  Write neatly/ type  Turn it in with your name on it!

 Notebooks ready!  Textbooks out!  Calculators!  Pencils!

 Emile’s rate:2.5 meters 1 second  Henri’s rate: 1 meter 1 second Who is faster?

What should Emile do? Give a head start What head start should he give his brother and how many meters should the race be? Is giving a head start a guarantee that the little brother will win? No. Emile will eventually catch up… So, what strategy do we need to ensure that the little brother is still ahead at the end of the race?

 Answer Problem 2.1 in your groups  Use evidence (show calculations, refer to the text for data, etc…) to argue your point  Record your group decision on the large paper  Be prepared to share with the class!

 How did your group interpret the problem?  What strategy did you use?  How did you determine what the length of time the race should be?  Why is your length of time reasonable?  Will Henry win the race?

 YOU are responsible for the number assigned to you.  You may NOT use a calculator that is not your number unless I approved it.  If your calculator has: writing on it, keys missing, broken parts, missing lid, missing batteries, damage to the screen or any part of it—YOU MUST PAY FOR IT!  It is a privilege to use it, so take care of it!

 The blue “2 nd ” key is like the “shift” key. By hitting it you will perform the function that is written in blue above the key selected.  Let’s locate the following keys together:  Y=  Window  Graph  XT Өn  2nd  Arrows

 2 nd  Window  you should be in table settings  Use the arrow keys to go down to “Indpnt” and be sure the darkened word is ASK (not AUTO)

 2 nd  Graph brings you to the table  In the X column enter the values 0-10 by pushing the 0 key, ENTER; then the 1 key, ENTER, and so on…  Some of your calculators may already have those values in them and that is OK!

 All equations will use “x” for your independent variable and “y” for the dependent variable. For example: if you have something like d= 2t, the “d” is “y” and the “t” is the “x”  If you have more than one equation to put in they are labeled with subscripts, such as y, y, y and so on. They do not do anything except help you keep track! (No multiplying, squaring, etc…) 1 2 3

 Hit the Y= key (clear out anything already in there)  For y = 2x + 1  You do this by pushing 2  the “XT Өn” key  +  1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------  Now let’s check the range of our windows to be sure our screen will show what we need.  Window  xmin: -25xmax: 25 xscl: 1 key ymin: -25ymax: 25 yscl: 1 1

 Push the “GRAPH” key  Watch the graph get drawn…  Let’s keep that equation in there, but enter another equation for y = -1x + 2  Do you remember how? TRY IT!  Hit “y=“ and use the arrow keys to go to the y spot and enter in the rule.  Then, push the GRAPH key and watch them BOTH get graphed! 2 2

 Moving Straight Ahead, Investigation 2  ACE 1, 29, 34
