SWBAT… find the GCF of whole numbers and monomials. 5/3/10 Agenda 1. WU (10 min) 2. GCF and factoring using the distributive property (40 min) Warm-Up: 1. Staple midterm corrections to the back of the midterm and place in the top bin. 2. Write hw in planner for the week 3. Questions from back of agenda problems? HW#1: Factors and GCF/ Factoring Using the Distributive Property

Monday, 5/3Tuesday, 5/4Wednesday, 5/5Thursday, 5/6Friday, 5/7 Greatest Common Factor Factoring polynomials using the distributive property HW#1 Factoring quadratics: x 2 + bx + c HW#2 ½ Day: A Solving quadratic equations HW#3 Factoring and solving quadratic equations: ax2 + bx + c HW#4 Monday, 5/10Tuesday, 5/11Wednesday, 5/12 Thursday, 5/13Friday, 5/14 ½ Day: B New Unit on Quadratic Functions Progress Report Cards Distributed Final will most likely be on Thursday, June 10, 2010 (covering all material from Semester 2, starting from slope!) FINAL STUDY GUIDE will be on Infinity website by end of this week.

Announcements For those that didn’t present, e-mail or tell me when your group will be presenting (before/after school or during advisory)  If you don’t present by EOD tomorrow, 25% off each additional day 25% off each day paper is late (missing 3 papers) Please bring in your signed forms! I will give you all the hw for this week today The hw will be collected for a grade on Friday (10 pts each)

Electra is making beaded bracelets for extra money. She has 60 gemstone beads and 15 glass beads. She wants each bracelet to have only one type of bead and all of the bracelets to have the same number of beads. Electra needs to determine the greatest common factor of 60 and 15.

Q: What is a prime number A: A prime number is any whole number greater than one whose only factors are one and itself. Q: What is the prime factorization of 60? (A whole # expressed as the product of prime factors) A: 2 2 ∙ 3 ∙ 5 Q: What is the prime factorization of 15? A: 3 ∙ 5 Q: What are the factors of 60? A: 1, 2,3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, 60 Q: What are the factors of 15? A: 1, 3, 5, 15 Q: What is the greatest common factor (GCF) of 60 and 15? A: 15 Q: How many and what kind of bracelets can Electra make? A: 5 bracelets; 4 gemstone, 1 glass

Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of Monomials To find the GCF of two or more monomials: 1. Find the factors of each number 2. Write all powers of variables as products 3. Circle the greatest common number 4. Circle the common variables

Directions: Find the GCF of each pair of monomials. 1. 6xy 3, 18yz 6xy 3 : 1, 2, 3, 6, x, y, y, y 18yz: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18, y, z GCF = 6y

Directions: Find the GCF of each pair of monomials. 2. 11a 2 b, 21ab 11a 2 b: 1, 11, a, a, b 21ab: 1, 3, 7, 21, a, b GCF = ab 3. 7gh, 11mp 7gh: 1, 7, g, h 11mp: 1, 11, m, p GCF = 1

Factoring Using the Distributive Property Directions: Use the distributive property to factor each polynomial. 1. 20z 2 + 35z Step 1. Take out GCF 5z(4z) + 5z(7) Step 2. Rewrite each term using the GCF 5z(4z + 7) Step 3. Distributive Property ALWAYS CHECK USING THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY

Directions: Use the distributive property to factor each polynomial. 2. 27y 2 + 18yStep 1. Take out GCF 9y(3y) + 9y(2)Step 2. Rewrite each term using the GCF 9y(3y + 2)Step 3. Distributive Property 3. 15w – 3v 3(5w) – 3(v) 3(5w – v) 4. -4a 2 b – 8ab 2 + 2ab 2ab(-2a) – 2ab(4b) + 2ab(1) 2ab(-2a – 4b + 1)
