10 Nurses Best Practice Guideline for Engaging Youth  Broaden education beyond prevention and academics  Focus on long term goal achievement  Engage them in a variety of settings where they are comforabable, beyond regular school day.  Be available when it is convenient for youth.  Active role in their learning, not just recipients.  Each child has the right to be involved in the decision making processes that affect them.

12  2007 United Nations Report on child welfare Canada ranked 12 th / 21, regarding health & safety, health & risk behaviors, & education.  Adolescent personal health practices continue into adulthood.  Social environment may have strongest impact on their health.  Acknowledge youth as experts  Work with youth rather than for youth  Uncomfortable teacher-led environments can seriously impact sexual health.  Peer-led education more popular, coupled with fewer girls reporting sex before age 16.

13  “No matter what health issue is being addressed, adolescents need specific knowledge regarding the issue; a specific set of skills that enable them to adapt and apply that knowledge to their own behavior; motivation to use those skills; a family, school and community environment that supports use of the requisite knowledge and skills; and a policy environment that provides sufficient resources and political commitment for improving adolescent health and changing social norms” (National Adolescent Health Information Center).
