3 Bees(Contests) They had many bees, or as we know it contests. The main bees were -wood chopping (men) -quilting (women) -corn husking (men) Germans introduced barn raising -neighbors joined together to build a house or barn frame in one day. -while the men were building, the women were cooking a feast.

4 Toys and Games The toys the children played with were -dolls -marbles -tops The games the children played were -tag -blind mans bluff -stoolball (cricket) -coasting (sledding)

5 Adult Sports -Bowling green (bowling) -billiards (pool) -fox hunting -card playing -horse racing -cockfighting -bull baiting -catching a greased pig -climbing a greased poll -foot racing -wrestling -dance contests

6 Food 4.12 Indians traded with them first. Then they taught them how to cook and grow corn. Corn was a major part of their diet. -women pounded it for hours. The colonists hunted wild deer, rabbits, and birds. - to preserve meat, it was salted, smoked, or pickled. - they used spices to disguise the rotten meat.

7 Food (cont.) Apple pie was one of the colonists favorite foods. - children picked huckleberries, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. -They had more peaches than they could eat. -They thought vegetables were unhealthy, especially when eaten raw. -They still respected and ate pumpkins, squash, beans, peas, and sweet potatoes that were introduced to them by the natives. -They grew parsnips, turnips, carrots, and onions, and made a mushy stew with them.
