2 Small, autonomous robots have been designed and developed for the sole purpose of cleaning homes and buildings. However, an autonomous stair climbing robot with the same efficiency has yet to be developed with significant success. In this paper, the requirements and specifications necessary to achieve such a feat, a background of robotics, attempts at an autonomous stair vacuum, and the possible solutions to remedy past failures of creating such a robot are discussed throughout this paper.

4  Otto von Guericke engineered the first vacuum pump in 1650, it was not until 1860 that the first vacuum patent was issued.  iRobot and Neato Robotics have been providing consumers with affordable autonomous vacuum cleaners since as early as the year 2002.  The first example of iRobot attempting a design that includes the stair climbing ability is Urbie, the urban robot.

15  Subsequently, there are many challenges to overcome when designing a robot suitable for the desired purpose.  The first is essential needs, because overextension of both time and resources can end up in a failure to produce a successful final product.  Simplicity is also often a key to successfully completing a project.
