2 Where will I ever see Scientific Notation? In your science textbook you read the following: “The speed of light is 5.89248 × 10 10 feet per minute.” What does this mean? Is that really fast or really slow?

4 Can you make rule describing how to multiply by a power of 10? The exponent tells us how many places to move the decimal point (to the right). For example: 7.639 × 10 7 means 7.639 × 10,000,000 OR just think: Move the decimal 7 places to the right! 76390000000 = 76,390,000 ( Remember that: 7.639 = 7.63900000000000…).

5 Where do you find a decimal point for a whole number? To the right of the one’s digit. (All the way at the end of the number) So 38 is really: 38.0000000000000000000…

8 What is scientific notation? Method for writing really big numbers so that they are easier to read. Often used in science books and other scientific journals. The product of two numbers: A number greater than or equal to 1 but less than 10. A power of 10. (1 – 10) × 10 ?

9 Think of Scientific Notation as if… You are given the solution and you have to think of the multiplication problem using a power of 10 that would give you that particular product. Practice: 290 = ___________ 3,482 = __________ 59,777 = __________ 2.9 × 10 2 3.482 × 10 3 5.9777 × 10 4
