1 Choosing an Appropriate Display
6-10 Choosing an Appropriate Display Course 1 Warm Up Problem of the Day Lesson Presentation

2 mean: 97, median: 97, mode: none
Warm Up Find the mean, median, and mode of each data set without the outlier. 1. 14,11,51,12,13,11 2. 52, 50, 11, 49, 52, 50 3. 99, 96, 98, 95, 97, 31 mean: 12.2, median: 12, mode: 11 mean: 50.6, median: 50, mode: 50, 52 mean: 97, median: 97, mode: none

3 Problem of the Day These are rits: 24042, 383, and These are not rits: 39239, 28, and Which of these are rits: 39883, 4040, and 101? Why? 101 is a rit because it is the same forward and backward.

4 Learn to choose an appropriate way to display data.

5 Common Uses of Data Displays
Depending on the data to be displayed, some types of graphs are more useful than others. Common Uses of Data Displays Line Plot You can use a line plot to show the frequency of values on a number line. Bar Graph You can use a bar graph to display and compare data in separate categories. Line Graph You can use a line to show how data change over a period of time. Stem-and-Leaf You can use a stem-and-leaf plot to show how often data values occur and how they are distributed.

6 Additional Example 1A: Choosing an Appropriate Data Display
A table shows the miles jogged by five boxers. Which graph would be more appropriate to show the data-a line plot or a line graph? Draw the more appropriate graph. Boxer Al Bo Max Jo Ty Miles 12 17 10 18

7 Additional Example 1A Continued
Think: is the information in the table describing the frequency of values? Is it describing a change over time? A line plot table shows the frequency of values on a number line. So a line plot table is more appropriate than a line graph table. xx x x x

8 Additional Example 1B: Choosing an Appropriate Data Display
The table shows the height of some plants. Which graph would be more appropriate to show the data-a bar graph or a stem-and-leaf plot? Draw the more appropriate graph. Height of Plants (ft) 11 27 14 35 26

9 Additional Example 1B Continued
Think: The table shows a number of different heights. It does not compare data in separate categories. Stems Leaves A stem-and-leaf plot shows how often data values occur. So a stem-and-leaf plot is more appropriate than a bar graph. Key 2|6 means 26.

10 Check It Out: Example 1A A table shows the number of feet of grass each neighbor must mow. Which graph would be more appropriate to show the data-a line graph or bar graph? Draw the more appropriate graph. Neighbor Sal Jax Pete Lar Ni Feet 32 11 5 25 20

11 Check It Out: Example 1A Continued
Think: is the information in the table describing a change over time? Is the information in the table divided into different categories? The table shows the number of feet each neighbor mows. The data should be displayed in separate categories. So a bar graph is more appropriate than a line graph.

12 Check It Out: Example 1B The table shows the number of tickets each student purchased for the school carnival. Which graph would be more appropriate to show the data-a line plot or line graph? Student Chad Julz Shane Lyn Rex Tickets 4 7 5

13 Check It Out: Example 1B Continued
Think: is the information in the table describing the frequency of values? Is it describing a change over time? A line plot shows the frequency of values on a number line. So a line plot is more appropriate than a line graph. xxx x x

14 Lesson Quiz 1. The table shows the weights of fish caught today. Which graph would be more appropriate to show the data- a bar graph or a line plot? 2. The table shows Dave’s income for five days. Which graph would be more appropriate to show the data- a line plot or a line graph? Today’s Catch (lbs) 4 3 2 line plot Day 1 2 3 4 5 Pay 75 83 77 80 85 Line graph
