1. The Joanna Briggs Institute: A world of evidence at the bedside
The Joanna Briggs Institute is an international not-for-profit, multi-disciplinary research and development organization within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Adelaide, South Australia.
Members are the lifeblood of this organization. The needs of those who work in and use health
services drives and influences the work undertaken by JBI and the resources we develop.
There are a variety of ways that you can become involved with the activities of the Institute and access our diverse range of resources. Whether your interests relate to developing evidence-based information, disseminating that information to staff, using evidence-based information to guide clinical decision making, or teaching evidence-based practice principles to students there is a JBI resource for you.
This presentation aims to provide you with a brief overview of JBI, our approach and what our resources can do for you.

2. The JBI Model of Evidence-based Health Care
The JBI approach to evidence-based health care is unique.
JBI regards evidence-based health care as a cyclical process.
Global health care needs, as identified by clinicians or patients/consumers,
are addressed through the generation of research evidence that is effective,
but also feasible, appropriate and meaningful to specific populations, cultures
and settings.
This evidence is collated and the results are appraised, synthesised and
transferred to service delivery settings and health professionals who utilise
is and evaluate its impact on health outcomes, health systems and professional
practice.

3. Therefore, in order to provide those who work in and use health systems globally with world class
information and resources, the JBI:
Considers international evidence related to the feasibility, appropriateness, meaningfulness and
effectiveness of health care interventions (evidence generation - the purple section)
Includes these different forms of evidence in a formal assessment called a systematic review
(evidence synthesis - the green section)
Globally disseminates information in appropriate, relevant formats to inform health systems,
health professionals and consumers (evidence transfer - the blue section)
Has designed programs to enable the effective implementation of evidence and evaluation of its
impact on health care practice (evidence utilisation - the red section)
This is all done with due consideration of the context in which care is delivered, individual
client preference and the professional judgement of the health professional (the red pebble in the
middle) with the hope of improving global health outcomes (the yellow section). Where gaps in
knowledge exist, this is fed back in to the purple section. Thus, it is the needs of JBI members that
drives the content we deliver.

4. International Collaboration
The Joanna Briggs Institute now has 38 Collaborating and Affiliate Centres across the world. In addition to this there are nearly 20 additional groups who conduct work with JBI.
These Centres are located in American, Australia, Canada, China, England, Honk Kong, Korea, Myanmar, Philippines, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and Wales!
The work conducted by collaborating centres relates to evidence synthesis (systematic reviews), evidence transfer (evidence summaries and recommended practices for JBI COnNECT +) or linguistic translation.
It is these important relationships that ensure the work of the Institute remains internationally relevant and meaningful to health professionals, educators and consumers across the world.

Access to high quality databases, journals and other publications enhances the capacity of staff to locate current evidence to inform practice. Health professionals will find the Best Practice information sheets, Evidence Summaries and Recommended Practices a useful addition to their practice. They can be used in the practice setting (I.e. in treatment rooms in clinics, nurses stations and doctors offices in hospital wards, nurses stations in residential care facilities or in the cars of community/school health staff) as a quick reference guide to a wide range of interventions.

Education providers and students can utilise this knowledge to gather information on a wide variety of topics relating to the management and conduct of a broad spectrum of clinical issues.

Consumers of health care are often faced with making difficult decisions about their treatment. Consumer information developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute ensures that consumers are provided with the same information as health professionals to assist in more informed, evidence-based decision making.

If you are interested in learning how to assess the quality of research evidence,
JBI has developed resources designed specifically to help with this process.
Systematic reviews are an important part of the evidence based process as they
review all of the current literature on a specific topic in a comprehensive and
methodical way. The result of this process is reliable, current information that
health professionals can use to make decisions about care.
Many health professionals have little time to conduct systematic reviews (this is
why JBI exists!). However, many will come across individual papers that they
may wish to use to inform their practice. JBI offers a unique resource to assist
in developing the skills and knowledge to assess the quality of individual papers
and this has proved a particularly relevant resource for busy health professionals.
As the Institute seeks not only to promote evidence based practice, but also to
support its uptake, there are a variety of networks that professionals can join to
link with other like-minded individuals and groups across the world to share
ideas and experiences.

Benefits to Health Professionals, Education Providers and Students:
Health professionals and students interested in appraising a single research paper (perhaps as part of a journal club or class) or multiple research papers on a single topic will benefit from using these resources. The SUMARI suite (System for the Unified Management of the Assessment and Review of Information) will be of particular interest to those who want to conduct systematic reviews (particularly reviews that consider evidence other than effectiveness).
All will find the skills and knowledge development achievable through the use of RAPid of particular relevance. The Rapid Assessment Protocol internet database (RAPid) is an online training course that provides a framework for critical appraisal of research). RAPid facilitates centralised activity with a core focus on critical appraisal skills, which are now considered fundamental to professional practice in healthcare.

Most health professionals are familiar with the need to conduct regular audit,
feedback and improvement cycles to improve the quality of care provided.
Similarly, evaluating the effectiveness of any best practice program is an
important part of continuous quality improvement. JBI recognises the
importance of creating systems that enable you to develop organisational policy
and practice manuals based on the best available evidence and programs to
evaluate the effectiveness of those systems. As a JBI member of subscriber to
JBI COnNECT+ you can access a range of resources to help disseminate, embed,
use and evaluate evidence based practice in your clinical setting.

eligible for JBI endorsement! JBI recognises that the key to clinical practice

facilitate and measure engagement in an evidence based approach to care and to
evaluate its impact on performance and outcomes.
Organizations with JBI Endorsement are able to demonstrate that their
achievements in evidence based health care have been recognised by a body
independent of their accrediting body as well as to clients, families and
