4 Specific Specific - A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. To set a specific goal you must answer the six "W" questions: *Who: Who is involved? *What: What do I want to accomplish? *Where: Identify a location. *When: Establish a time frame. *Which: Identify requirements and constraints. *Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.

5 Specific Well defined Define precisely the objective or outcome you want. Provide enough detail so that there is no indecision as to what exactly you should be doing when the time comes to do it. Define precisely the objective or outcome you want.

6 Measurable Measurable - Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your goal.

7 Your goal should be such that when you are through you have some tangible evidence of completion Define objectively how you will know when you've attained it Have some means to be able to know if the goal is obtainable or how far away completion is. 8 Attainable Attainable - When you identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure out ways you can make them come true. You develop the attitudes, abilities, skills, and financial capacity to reach them. You begin seeing previously overlooked opportunities to bring yourself closer to the achievement of your goals.

9 You agree to the goal and so do others affected by it Your goal should be set by you rather than by someone else. You know best your strengths and weaknesses, and can use this information to maximize your chances of success Use action verbs to describe the steps required. Agreed, Acceptable, Action-Oriented

10 Realistic - To be realistic, a goal must represent an objective toward which you are both willing and able to work. Confirm your belief that the goal is indeed possible. Anchored in reality and attainable Look at the resources, knowledge, and time available; can the goal be accomplished? Keep your goals within the realm of possible, or you will get discouraged. Realistic

12 Tangible/Time-framed Tangible - A goal is tangible when you can experience it with one of the senses, that is, taste, touch, smell, sight or hearing. When your goal is tangible, or when you tie an tangible goal to a intangible goal, you have a better chance of making it specific and measurable and thus attainable.

13 Tangible/Time-framed Set a time frame - when do you plan to work at your goal, e.g., between 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Anything that will take you more that two hours to complete, break into smaller, more manageable chunks. Set a deadline for reaching your goal How much time is needed to accomplish the goal Having too much time can affect the project performance

15 Your goal must not conflict with another goal, and must be congruent with each and every of your values, purpose, vision and mission. Otherwise difficulty will ensue. Consistent

16 Humane - Your goal must not do another person harm. Don't forget about being kind, caring, and compassionate. The end does not justify the means. Humane
