1 Srimad Bhagavatham 1.1.3

2 SB 1.1.3 nigama-kalpa-taror galitaà phalaà çuka-mukhäd amåta-drava-saàyutam pibata bhägavataà rasam älayaà muhur aho rasikä bhuvi bhävukäù O expert and thoughtful men, relish Çrémad-Bhägavatam, the mature fruit of the desire tree of Vedic literatures. It emanated from the lips of Çré Çukadeva Gosvämé. Therefore this fruit has become even more tasteful, although its nectarean juice was already relishable for all, including liberated souls.

3 Srila Prabhupada’s purport
1st para – glorification of Srimad Bhagavatham and how to respect and receive it 2nd para – vedas as desire fulfilling tree 3rd - 6th para – Rasa 7th – 9th para - Qualification of Sukadev Goswami 10th & 11th para – how to receive it, disciplic succession, professional reciters

4 The desire Tree of Vedas
Kalpa taror – desire tree (Vedas) – potency to fulfill one’s desire Both material necessities and spiritual realization Knowledge covering All areas to keep body and soul together Gradual rising to the spiritual platform yävän artha udapäne sarvataù samplutodake tävän sarveñu vedeñu brähmaëasya vijänataù All purposes served by a small well can at once be served by a great reservoir of water. Similarly, all the purposes of the Vedas can be served to one who knows the purpose behind them.

5 Srimad Bhagavatham The Mature Fruit
Galitam phalam & cream of all vedic knowledge How Vyasa deva wrote Srimad Bhagavatham at his mature realization Natural commentary on the Vedanta sutras Very difficult to obtain but directly available in this age Non different from Sri Krishna (Ref ) [Caitanya Bhagavath] Prema rupa bhagavatha cari veda kaya – the four vedas says Bhagavath is the embodiment of Krsna prema cari veda – dadhi bhagavata – navanita mathilena suke khailena pariksita Dharma artha kama moksa - They are not the religion of the soul Social prosperity gaining wealth, liberation Materially motivated religious activities - rejecting What is the need of any other scripture (1.1.2) - Basically Vyasa dev is asking us to throw away everything he has written so far Sukadev Goswami is the churning rod

6 Srimad Bhagavatham The Mature Fruit
Vyasa deva wrote Srimad Bhagavatham at his mature realization You have fully delineated the subject of impersonal Brahman as well as the knowledge derived therefrom. Why should you be despondent in spite of all this, thinking that you are undone, my dear prabhu? Your inquiries were full and your studies were also well fulfilled, and there is no doubt that you have prepared a great and wonderful work, the Mahäbhärata, which is full of all kinds of Vedic sequences elaborately explained. Çré Närada said: You have not actually broadcast the sublime and spotless glories of the Personality of Godhead. That philosophy which does not satisfy the transcendental senses of the Lord is considered worthless. Those words which do not describe the glories of the Lord, who alone can sanctify the atmosphere of the whole universe, are considered by saintly persons to be like unto a place of pilgrimage for crows. Since the all-perfect persons are inhabitants of the transcendental abode, they do not derive any pleasure there.

7 Srimad Bhagavatham Natural commentary
Natural commentary on the Vedanta sutras as said by Sri Caitanya mahaprabhu In the Garuòa Puräëa it is said: artho 'yaà brahma-süträëäà bhäratärtha-vinirëayaù gäyatré-bhäñya-rüpo 'sau vedärtha-paribåàhitaù grantho 'ñöädaça-sähasraù çrémad-bhägavatäbhidhaù "The Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the authorized explanation of Brahma-sütra, and it is a further explanation of Mahäbhärata. It is the expansion of the gäyatré mantra and the essence of all Vedic knowledge. This Çrémad-Bhägavatam, containing eighteen thousand verses, is known as the explanation of all Vedic literature.”

8 Srimad Bhagavatham Non different from Sri Krishna
kåñëe sva-dhämopagate dharma-jïänädibhiù saha kalau nañöa-dåçäm eña puräëärko 'dhunoditaù This Bhägavata Puräëa is as brilliant as the sun, and it has arisen just after the departure of Lord Kåñëa to His own abode, accompanied by religion, knowledge, etc. Persons who have lost their vision due to the dense darkness of ignorance in the age of Kali shall get light from this Puräëa. They are still more blind in the present age of quarrel, or Kali-yuga. In the Kali-yuga the population is just a royal edition of the animals. They have nothing to do with spiritual knowledge or godly religious life. They are so blind that they cannot see anything beyond the jurisdiction of the subtle mind, intelligence or ego empowered Çré Vyäsadeva through Närada to compile the messages of the Çrémad-Bhägavatam, and thus both the Bhagavad-gétä and the Çrémad-Bhägavatam are like torchbearers for the blind people of this age. In other words, if men in this age of Kali want to see the real light of life, they must take to these two books only, and their aim of life will be fulfilled. Bhagavad-gétä is the preliminary study of the Bhägavatam. And Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the summum bonum of life, Lord Çré Kåñëa personified. We must therefore accept Çrémad-Bhägavatam as the direct representation of Lord Kåñëa. One who can see Çrémad-Bhägavatam can see also Lord Çré Kåñëa in person. They are identical.

9 Srimad Bhagavatham Non different from Sri Krishna
kåñëa-tulya bhägavata—vibhu, sarväçraya prati-çloke prati-akñare nänä artha kaya “Çrémad-Bhägavatam is as great as Kåñëa, the Supreme Lord and shelter of everything. In each and every verse of Çrémad-Bhägavatam and in each and every syllable, there are various meanings. Madhya Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to Srila Santana Goswami Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to Srila Santana Goswami

10 The Nectarean Juice of Bhagavatham
Rasa – mellow of relationship or taste Mundane – does not endure Spiritual – continues perpetually 12 varieties of Rasas (Primary, Secondary) Raso vai saha – Krishna – Fountainhead of all rasas Relationship of the living entity with the Lord That rasa is present in Srimad Bhagavatham which one relishes even at liberated stage O saintly King, I was certainly situated perfectly in transcendence, yet I was still attracted by the delineation of the pastimes of the Lord, who is described by enlightened verses. (2.1.9) Brahma to insignificant ant – wants to enjoy some rasa Anything we do we do it because there is some rasa in it either perverted or spiritual If we watch a movie, we want to enjoy rasa (our relationship with Krishna) without Krishna.. Mundane doesn’t endure – bhoga, tyaga - Perversion of original spiritual rasa (mellow of relationship) with the supreme Lord. Spiritual rasa – which is enjoyed in the liberated stage is experienced in this literature… Story of Sukadeva Goswami – after his birth he didn’t need any purificatory rituals or spiritual training.. He was liberated.. At birth He left his home and was wandering the forest.. Vyasa dev sent a hunter who learned few verses from Srimad bhagavatham and was repeating it. He especially heard a verse from 10th canto of srimad Bhagavatham which discusses how Krishna walks ???? One will never become satiated by tasting the nectar of SMB. It will never diminish.

11 Emanating from the mouth of Srila Sukhadeva Gosvami
Sukhadeva Gosvami – A liberated Soul Coming down in disciplic succession, Bonafide (right source) From parrot => Suka (Sweetness is even enhanced) Did not just parroted the Bhagavatham, but presented with depth of his own realization Did not dilute, but presented in Easily digestible format Attractive to all classes of men Didn’t just mimic When sukadev Goswami was speaking, Vyasa dev and Narada Muni were present. They relished Bhagavatham like never before. Unless one is liberated stage one will not be able to assimilate spiritual rasa, esp Lord Krishna’s vrindavan pastimes. Sukadev Goswami presented in such a way that systematically presenting that all the topics needed to digest these pastimes

12 Whom to receive Srimad Bhagavatham from?
In disciplic succession, not from professional men Mahaprabhu’s dealings with Devananda pandit, Vallabhacharya Swarup Damodar’s advice to Brahmana poet yäha, bhägavata paòa vaiñëavera sthäne ekänta äçraya kara caitanya-caraëe “If you want to understand Çrémad-Bhägavatam,” he said, “you must approach a self-realized Vaiñëava and hear from him. You can do this when you have completely taken shelter of the lotus feet of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu.” The ripened fruit is not dropped all of a sudden from Krishna loka.. Professional reciters..

13 How to receive Srimad Bhagavatham
Anxious to hear – first qualification Patient and submissive hearing Great respect and attention, Eagerness Susrusubhis – (1.1.2) – as soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhagavatham, by this culture of knowledge the supreme Lord is established within his heart One can elevate to paramahamsa stage simply by agreeing to receive this message

14 How one should hear & from whom?
………..One should hear with attention from the real person, and then he can at once realize the presence of Lord Krishna in every page……..somehow or other if some one hears [the Bhagavatham] with rapt attention from the right person at the very beginning one can assuredly see Lord Sri Krishna in person in the pages of Bhagavatham (Bhag purport)

15 Srila Prabhupada’s purports
Person Bhagavata - “My purports are my devotional ecstasies” “In my books the philosophy of Krishna Consciousness is explained fully, so if there’s anything you don’t understand, then you simply have to read again and again. By reading daily the knowledge will be revealed to you……you may please me the most by reading my books and following the instructions therein…”
