3 The Chordates Members of the phylum Chordata are called chordates
All chordates share four characteristics: a dorsal hollow nerve cord a notochord a pharyngeal pouches a tail that extends beyond the anus

4 More Chordates are Vertebrates
More than 99% of all chrodates are placed in the subphylum Vertebrata The backbone replaces the notochord in most developing vertebrates

6 Nonvertebrate Chordate
The two groups of nonvertebrate chordates are tunicates and lancelets. Tunicates: the larval form has all of the chordate characteristics.

8 Nonvertebrate Chordate
Lancelets: The small fishlike creatures called lancelets that live on the sandy ocean bottom. - Have a closed circulatory system - Do not have a true heart
