CONFIDENTIAL The Team Anita Wilhelm MIMS UC Berkeley, May 2004 - Graduate Researcher of camera phone based research (Prof. Marc Davis), BS University of Michigan Yahoo! Mobile, Electronic Arts Specialty: Mobile Interaction Design and Usability Jeff Towle MIMS UC Berkeley, May 2004 - Graduate Researcher of camera phone based research (Prof. Marc Davis), BS University of Washington Intel Research, Seattle, University of Washington Specialty: Visual Communities

CONFIDENTIAL Our Inspiration Mobile Media Metadata Adding metadata at point of capture on Camera Phones with Professor Marc Davis and Garage Cinema Research at UC Berkeley Deployed prototype system to 55 masters students and researchers for 4 months User Studies Interviews of camera phone users Interviewed MMM users after use Focus groups of MMM and camera phone usage

CONFIDENTIAL Intersecting Opportunities Mobile Gaming Photo Sharing Social Networking

CONFIDENTIAL Always Properties of the Camera Phone Always on Always with me Always moving Always personal: only my friends have my number Always networked: available for immediate sharing Always active: it calls me Always changing photography: fun, spontaneous, random, daily photos

CONFIDENTIAL Facilitate Connected Presence and Play No winners: Goal is not winning but, social play Casual play/ “one click play” Persistent Asynchronous play Virtual vs. physical set up Framework for user generated content and play

CONFIDENTIAL The First Version - Zooke A visual treasure hunt A community driven reality game where players create, complete, and judge photo challenges (Zookes) Facilitate exploratory activity of real environments and encourage picture taking of daily encounters in a fun way Allow players to critically analyze their environment – both socially and physically Facilitate metadata gathering for photos

CONFIDENTIAL Focus Group Findings People liked it! Prior to playing the participants were skeptical, but now many wanted to keep playing! Places people played: Walking to school Waiting for/ riding the bus Walking down the street Waiting for people Eating in a restaurant alone At the airport Driving At home

CONFIDENTIAL Focus Group Findings Altered their perception of the world “I started looking for Zookes (challenges) [when walking down the street].” “I enjoyed it, I found myself looking at things differently.” “I was trying to figure out how do I capture this in a picture?” “[I was trying to] find ‘subliminal messages’ in a shopping area in San Francisco.”

CONFIDENTIAL Focus Group Findings Caused them to think about social interactions differently “I had an ‘ugly jacket’ Zooke (challenge). I saw a woman wearing a red jacket, but I couldn’t get her because the resolution was too bad. So then I didn’t know if she would notice me, if I approached her… and then I started to wonder if I should ask her if I could take a picture… then I felt bad because I was fulfilling ‘ugly jacket’… no, I didn’t take it.”

CONFIDENTIAL Deconstructing Environments Challenge Physical and Social Boundaries The Hunt: Exploration Search critically for new meanings in their environments Critically reanalyze everyday things and activities Assign new labels to the familiar Examine social interactions A community driven reality game where players create, complete, and judge photo challenges (Zookes) The Capture: Decision How close can I get? Should I ask permission? Can I use on object as a barrier to mask my efforts? Should I reassign the real world object with the game world label, and what if any implications does that have in the real world?

CONFIDENTIAL “ Instead of thinking about virtual games and how to make them fit the small screen. We like to think about games we played when we were younge r and how to bring part of them to the virtual world.” The Caterpillar Mobile Team
