Properties of Air12/2/11  Objective: I will be able to analyze compression and pressure I will be able to define compression, pressure, mass and weight Do Now: 1. Why do meteorologists use weather tools? 2. What type of weather tools can they use?

Compression and Pressure Review  Copy and answer the following questions 1. What do you think happens to the air when it is pushed into a smaller space? 2. What happens to push the plunger back out when you release the pressure on the plunger?

Forces of Air  Compression: When a molecule of a substance is forced into a smaller space  The substance will push back with a force equal to the force compressing the substance  Pressure: The pushback or force of a compressed substance

Syringe Diagram  Cut and paste the diagram into your notebooks  Draw a representation of the different spacing of air molecules  Underneath use the key terms “compression” and “pressure” to describe what is happening in the diagram  Underline and highlight the key words

Does air have mass?  What do you think?  Discuss at your table, be prepared to share your answers with the class

Glossary Terms  Mass: The amount of matter (material) an object has  Weight: The pull or force between Earth and the matter in an object or substance
