Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard NSIDC Distribution Statistics

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard Current Organization

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard Outline NSIDC Overview What is the DAHLI project? Currently funded activities Future plans

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard IPY Goals DAHLI Hopes to Contribute to To enhance the abilities of scientists, historians, and researchers in the arts and humanities to conduct research during the upcoming IPY period and for years to come To contribute in engaging the awareness, interest, and understanding of students, the general public, and decision-makers worldwide in the purpose of and value of polar research and monitoring

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard How? Creating an on-line gazetteer of who has what and where Creating a searchable bibliographic database of records and literature from the three prior IPYs These records are scattered around the world and many have never been cataloged Allowing direct access to those materials that are or will be made available digitally Creating digital data sets from analog sources where appropriate

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard Outline NSIDC Overview What is the DAHLI project? Currently funded activities Future plans

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard What We Have Currently Funded NOAA’s Climate Database Modernization Program (CDMP) Lason, one of NOAA’s CDMP contractors, will create bibliographic entries, digitize and/or key in specified materials 2006 DAHLI-related activities will concentrate on materials held locally, such as materials held by  the NSIDC library,  CIRES staff,  the Boulder Labs libraries (NOAA, NIST, NTIA)

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard What We Have Currently Funded NOAA@NISDCNOAA@NISDC support: CDMP program management Support to enter unique bibliographic records available into the Arctic and Antarctic Regions database Computer resources for storing digitized materials and making them available on-line Support for the creation/documentation of data sets based on digitized data as resources permit

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard Outline NSIDC Overview What is the DAHLI project? Currently funded activities Future plans

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard Future Plans? CDMP Activities: Assuming the CDMP program continues in 2007, attention will turn to materials held by existing collaborating organizations

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard Future Plans (continued) NSF IPY Proposal Activities: Establish a DAHLI advisory board responsible for prioritizing materials for incorporation into the DAHLI system Establish a minimum set of metadata required to populate and search for materials via library and data center style searches as well as to optimize materials for educational use

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard Future Plans (continued) Creation of an open-source based, language neutral, web-accessible search engine allowing both library and data center search and access to materials from prior IPYs Creation of interfaces that allow participants to submit bibliographic entries and materials for inclusion in the DAHLI system Establishment of a testing and assessment feedback process to measure the use and usability of the DAHLI system

Presented at the 21st Polar Libraries Colloquy, Rome, May 8-12, 2006 By Ruth Duerr and Allaina Howard Future Plans (continued) Establish mechanisms to mirror the DAHLI system at SPRI and at least one other distributed site (e.g., via LOCKSS software) Leverage collaborations with organizations and other I*Y-related programs such as the IGY “Gold Program” for outreach to minimize cost
