4. Some peasants started causing trouble. They argued with their Lords and even started rebellions. People became obsessed with death. Many paintings and songs were about skeletons and dying. Wages rose for peasants. A ploughman who got paid 2 shillings a week in 1347 was earning 10 shillings by 1350. Lords got poorer. They had to cut back on expensive luxuries like hunting and feasts. Many people became more religious. Churches were full on Sundays and a group called the Flagellants whipped themselves to say sorry for their sins. The king became very strict. New laws were passed to prevent peasants from leaving their village, and to stop them wearing expensive clothes. © George Spencer School 2010
