2 2 Suffragettes What will I learn?  Who the Suffragettes were.  The tactics used by the Suffragettes.  The impact of the Suffragettes.

3 3 Who were the Suffragettes?  The Suffragettes was another women’s suffrage society that was formed in 1903.  Led by Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters Sylvia and Christabel.  Called the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU).  The Suffragettes are remembered for the militant tactics used.

5 5 Motto  The motto of the Suffragettes was: “Deeds Not Words”

7 7 Tactics  Between 1903 and 1906, the Suffragettes used a number of peaceful tactics – for example: marches, meetings, letters and articles in newspapers.  After 1906, the campaign became more violent – militant tactics were used.

8 8  The Suffragettes believed that the campaign for the vote should draw as much attention as possible.  They believed that by making a nuisance of themselves, men would be forced to give them the vote.

11 11  The most serious disturbance came in 1913 when Emily Davison threw herself under the king’s horse during the Derby and died.

13 13 Force-Feeding  When some Suffragettes were arrested, they went on hunger strike.  The prison authorities tried to force- feed their suffragette prisoners, which was a gruesome experience.  This gave the Suffragettes a lot of sympathy and made the government look bad.

15 15 The Cat and Mouse Act 1913  Allowed prison authorities to release hunger-striking suffragettes when they got too weak.  They would re-arrest them later when they had recovered at home.

17 17 Impact of the Suffragettes  Despite all their good and bad publicity, the Suffragettes were no nearer to getting the vote than before.  In August 1914, the campaign to win the vote was halted – Britain was now at war.
