CSCI 5593 Advanced Computer Architecture Dirk Grunwald Department of Computer Science Fall 2001
2
Course Enrollment u All people on wait list will be added u BUT, all students with out perquisite classes will be dropped. u Why? l Not doing this will cheat the students who are prepared by “dumbing down” the class

ECEN 5593 (3). l Advanced Computer Architecture. Provides a broad-scope treatment of important concepts in the design and implementation of high- performance computer systems. Discusses important issues in the pipelining of a machine and the design of cache memory systems. Also studies current and historically important computer architectures. Prereq., ECEN 4593 or instructor consent. Same as CSCI 5593.45935593

ECEN 4593 (3). u Computer Organization. Studies computer design at the gate level. Discusses microprogrammed and hardwired control units, memory design, arithmetic and logic units, I/O, and peripheral devices. Briefly covers aspects of modern computer architecture such as parallel processing and reduced instruction set computers. Prereq., ECEN 3100. Same as CSCI 4593.31004593

What that means u You should know the following material from “Computer Organization and Design – The Hardware Software Interface” (undergrad text) l Instruction representation l How languages map to machines l Arithmetic representation & implementation Two’s complement, adder implementation, multipliers, etc l Simple datapath & control l Caches, cache design l Basics of logic design (H&P appendix B)

What if I have the preq’s but they don’t show on my record? u Easiest: show me the record/transcript u I’m preparing an exam equivalent to the final exam for the undergrad class (shorter, though). You can take it next Tuesday and demonstrate competence.
