Support and encouragement Resource 17 || Presentation

Being in an environment where others are using computer technology is generally a positive thing. Support and encouragement can come from: School leaders and executive other teachers students family members friends.

For some computer learners, however, seeing others who have well developed computer skills, or use computers regularly, can diminish their self-efficacy.

Others may do things for you rather than teaching you how to do it Since others are volunteering to do computer tasks, there is little need to learn yourself It may be intimidating seeing others around you who are perceived as more capable than you It may feel embarrassing to admit to those around you that you don’t know how to do something There may be a perceived social pressure to ‘keep up’ which some teachers may rail against It may feel threatening since students and children who are capable computer users challenge traditional knowledge and power balances between teacher and student, parent and offspring.

Just when I think I know enough about IT to get by, another person does or says something that makes me feel incompetent.

Small group discussion Do any of the students in your class demonstrate learned helplessness? (in relation to technology, or more generally) What could you, as a teacher, do to encourage their independence? Whole-school discussion How can we, as a school staff, provide support and encouragement to each other without encouraging learned helplessness?

Weekly challenge Become conscious this week of the type of support and encouragement you offer others and what impact this might have on them. Metacognition in the classroom Seek out at least one opportunity to ask a student to show you a technology skill. Reflect on whether their help was positive or not so positive, and in what way.
