1 In the 1800s and 1900s people fought for the rights we have today. Those people are called reformers. Many reforms occurred during this time. Reformer – someone who wanted change. Abolitionist – a reformer who believed that slavery should be erased, or abolished, from the land. Abolitionist and Reformers

2 Many of these reforms began in the Northeast. One of the biggest was the Abolitionist Movement. The Abolitionist Movement

3 William Lloyd Garrison Met in 1833 in Philadelphia - formed the American Anti-Slavery Society. Published a paper called The Liberator. Liberator means one who brings freedom.

4 Frederick Douglas “Without a struggle, there can be no progress” A slave Spoke at meetings and convinced people to fight against slavery. Worked for freedom of ALL people

5 Sojourner Truth A slave Spoke at meetings and convinced people to fight against slavery. Worked for freedom of ALL people

6 Result of the Abolitionist Movement Disagreements between the Northern and Southern States grew. Led to the Civil War In 1865, after the war, the Thirteenth Amendment was added to the Constitution. It made slavery illegal in the United States.

7 Reformers In the 1900s, women did not have the same rights as men. The fight for women’s rights began in the 1800s. Frederick Douglas and Sojourner Truth also worked to help women.

8 Elizabeth Cady Stanton Was also an abolitionist Organized the first women’s rights convention The convention took place in 1848 in Seneca Falls, NY Credited as being the leader of the convention

9 Lucretia Mott Was also an abolitionist Organized the first women’s rights convention The convention took place in 1848 in Seneca Falls, NY Mentored Elizabeth Cady Stanton in her beliefs.

10 Susan B. Anthony A leader in women’s rights movement. Averaged 75-100 speeches a year.

11 Women’s Right Movement The right to vote is called suffrage. The struggle lasted 72 years after the Seneca Falls convention. In 1920 the Nineteenth Amendment was passed which gave women the right to vote.
