7 Take Part. Get Set For Life.™ National Federation of State High School Associations STRESS THE GOLDEN RULE OF ALL TRACK & FIELD OFFICIALS: “No athlete should be allowed to gain an unfair advantage, and no athlete should have to suffer an unfair disadvantage.”

Get Set For Life.™ National Federation of State High School Associations ASSIGNING UMPIRES: Assign umpires a number, with 1 being the most experienced, 2 being the second- most experienced, etc. Large meets: assign four captains – 1. main straight 2. first curve 3. back straight 4. second curve

Get Set For Life.™ National Federation of State High School Associations UMPIRES, cont.: Use diagrams to rank placement priority for each event (see examples on next slides) If you have three umpires, place them in positions 1, 2 & 3. If you have seven, place them in positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7, etc. Following examples will be posted on mshsl.org, Track and Field page, under Resources.

Get Set For Life.™ National Federation of State High School Associations HEAD UMPIRE (3-11-1) General supervision over umpires Assign umpires to positions Hurdle races: signal when hurdles are set Assign umpires to adequately observe the entire turn Each umpire on turn near finish line should move toward finish line as race is ending

Get Set For Life.™ National Federation of State High School Associations ASSISTANT UMPIRES (3-11-4) Equip with a yellow flag and a white flag Immediately signal yellow flag overhead when an infraction or irregularity occurs during a race When race is completed, report infraction to the head umpire When no infraction, wave the white flag.

21 Take Part. Get Set For Life.™ National Federation of State High School Associations ___1. The first four events of a Girls’ dual meet are 4 X 800m, 100m HH, 100m and 1600m. _0_ 1. 1-2-1A, (p 10) 4 X 800m, 100m HH, 100m, and 4 X 200m.
