IICWG Action Item 2 Identify national centre requirements for future spaceborn SAR data orders

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland IICWG Survey Results  9 out of 13 questionnaires were completed  Response from Canada, USA, Russia, Norway, Finland, Japan, China, Denmark, Germany Thank you !

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland Present Usage of SAR  Operational users of Near Real Time ERS and / or RADARSAT data National Ice Center, USA Canadian Ice Service Greenland Ice Service Finnish Ice Service Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute BSH, German Ice Service Approximately 8.000 Radarsat scenes per year (mostly ScanSar)

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland Present Usage of SAR  Would like to use RADARSAT Norwegian Meteorological Institute, Ice Patrol. Interested in using 100 - 150 scenes SCN / year Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Russia National Research Center for Marine Environment Forecasts, China Interested in using 6 SCW / year Japan Meteorological Agency Interested in using 50 - 100 scenes per year

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland Future Usage of SAR  ENVISAT AO’s National Ice Center, USA Canadian Ice Service Greenland Ice Service Finnish Ice Service National Research Center for Marine Environment Forecasts, China Greenland Ice Service Approximately 2.500 AO Envisat scenes

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland Future Usage of SAR  ENVISAT AO’s (cont.) There is a strong wish to evaluate Envisat data in an operational environment Mostly ScanSAR Wide and Global Mode data will be used for operational purposes Alternating Polarisation data will mostly be used for research It is anticipated that Envisat and Radarsat data in combination may provide the basis for better products

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland Future Usage of SAR  ENVISAT AO’s (cont..) The Envisat ground segment must be able to provide NRT data - timeliness is crucial Envisat will hopefully be able to fill the gab (if any) between Radarsat-1 and 2 As is the case of Radarsat high prices on Envisat data will be a major obstacle against widespread use Will competition lead to lower prices ? Only a few ice services state that they intend to buy data

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland SAR Data Sharing Finnish & Swedish Ice Service CIS & NIC

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland Potential SAR Data Sharing NIC, CIS & DMI All Baltic Ice Services and shipping companies AARI, Lukoil, Gazprom

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland SAR Data Sharing  The ideas of SAR data sharing relates both to Radarsat and Envisat data  Lower prices per scene and a larger pool of data are driving forces  Legal, contractual and practical matters must be examined

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland SAR Data Quality  Generally users are satisfied with the quality of the data  However, quality is not necessarily consistent from one ground station to another  It is important that customised products are available from all ground stations  Will future processing allow for user defined products ?

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland SAR Data Format  Data should be delivered in a consistent format - independent of ground station  Data format inconsistencies will influence infrastructure at ice centers  More than one data format / compression could be supported  New formats for Radarsat-2 (GeoTiff ??)

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland SAR Data Continuity  It is evident that a gab between Radarsat-1 and 2 will have a strong impact on operations  Contingency plans are being prepared  In general continuity is an important issue

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland The Role of IICWG  The action item was National centre requirements for future spaceborn SAR data orders

OCTOBER 2000IICWG-II Reykjavik, Iceland The Role of IICWG  How do we proceed from here ? Establish a subgroup to Develop the principles and mechanisms for data access –Commercial SAR data –Other data sets (current and future), e.g. scatterometry data Influence flight agencies and data suppliers to accommodate the broader interests of the ice charting community  The challenge: designate points of contact, date and venue for this meeting before the end of IICWG-2
