4
UNC BIRCWH Program The BIRCWH Program is sponsored by an NIH grant, the primary funding for which comes from the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH)
5
UNC BIRCWH Program The BIRCWH Award employs the K12 Mechanism
6
K12 Award A K12 grant is an institutional award designed to provide protected time to a group of scientists committed to academic research careers. A K12 Award is very much like a training grant, but one that is designed for junior faculty rather than for post- doctoral fellows
7
UNC BIRCWH Program UNC BIRCWH Award was first funded in September, 2000 At its initial funding, this grant brought 5 years of NIH funding with total costs of $500,000 per year We have used the vast majority of these $’s to provide salary support to junior faculty members in exchange for 75% protected research time Our goal has always been to assure that within 2 years each BIRCWH Scholar writes and submits an independent NIH grant (e.g., K23, K08, R01)
8
UNC BIRCWH Program We developed the concept that the UNC BIRCWH Program would have both: BIRCWH Scholars BIRCWH Scholars BIRCWH Associates BIRCWH Associates
9
BIRCWH Scholar An individual who is receiving salary support from the BIRCWH grant
10
BIRCWH Associate An individual who had previously received salary support from the BIRCWH grant, but who subsequently went on to compete successfully for his/her own, independent grant support
11
UNC BIRCWH Program This concept (i.e., Scholars and Associates) has enabled us to grow the UNC BIRCWH Program substantially. critical mass By the end of year - 04, our BIRCWH Program had grown to a critical mass of 17 young people (9 MDs, 6 PhDs, 1 PharmD, and 1 MD-PhD), who came to us with remarkably diverse interests and from very different backgrounds, but they all shared a passion & commitment to research in the area of women’s health
12
UNC BIRCWH Program We submitted the competitive renewal for our BIRCWH Program in January, 2005. In the Summary Statement, the reviewers commented: “Overall this application is an outstanding one that has generated success since the inception of the program. It is an outstanding program with a well-dedicated and organized staff and extreme institutional support.” “The grant support and publication record of these BIRCWH Scholars is absolutely remarkable.”
13
UNC BIRCWH Program Indeed, our BIRCWH Program has consistently identified by the NIH as the model for all BIRCWH Programs to emulate. The competitive renewal application that we submitted in early 2005 received an Outstanding Priority Score (126). We received funding for the five year period extending from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2010.

UNC BIRCWH PROGRAM In summary, the BIRCWH Program has been remarkably successful It has enabled us here at UNC to train an entire cohort of women’s health researchers The return on investment for the BIRCWH Award here at UNC has been truly remarkable, as all of our graduates remain in academe, all are actively involved in women’s health research, and each has been able to compete for extramural funding The NIH in general and the Office of Research in Women’s Health in particular deserve a great deal of credit for creating this program
