2 I was born on February 4 th in 1913. I was born in Tuskegee, Alabama. I left school as a junior to help my sick grandmother. I was rewarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Award by the NAACP. I started the Montgomery Bus Boycott. I received the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award. I was attacked by Joseph Skipper at my house. I was a recipient of the Alabama Academy Award. I died in 2005. Who Am I?

5  Born on February 4 th in 1913. › Tuskegee, Alabama  Grew up through “times of racial discrimination and activism for racial equality.”

6  Left high school during her junior year.  Two years (1932) later she married Raymond Parks.

7  Started in 1955  Refused to move for a white man on the bus and was arrested. › Released on bail that night.

8  Court decided that Alabama’s segregation laws were unconstitutional for the public.

9  Segregation law changed and made the Montgomery Bus Boycott a 382 day boycott.

10  Continued to be an active member of the NAACP. › National Association for the Advancement of Colored People  The Civil Rights Act was passed a year later and signed by Lyndan B. Johnson.

11  1980: Martin Luther King Jr. Award by the NAACP  1992: Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award  Founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development

12  1999: TIME magazine named Parks one of the most influential people of the century.  2000: Alabama Academy Award  2000: Rosa Parks Museum and Library was dedicated to Troy University

13  Parks died in 2005 due to complications of progressive dementia.

16 I was born on January 20 th in 1954. I was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi. When I was nine I was raped by my cousin. I won the Elk’s Club speaking contest. I was the anchor on A.M. Chicago and in 1985 the show was named after me. I won the Nashville Miss Fire Prevention Contest. I was an anchor at Nashville’s WTVF-TV. I attended the White House Conference on Youth in Colorado and represented Tennessee. I received the Bob Hope for Humanitarian Award in 2002. Who Am I?

19  Born on January 29 th in 1954. › Kosciusko, Mississippi  Started kindergarten at the age of five, but was moved to first grade right away.  When she was nine, she was raped by her cousin.

20  1968: attended an all white high school.  Her senior year, 1970 she won an Elk’s Club speaking contest.  Attended a White House Conference on Youth in Colorado and represented Tennessee.

21  1972: anchor at Nashville’s WTVF-TV.  1984: anchor on A.M. Chicago  A few years later A.M. Chicago was renamed the Oprah Winfrey Show.

22  Formed her own production company, Harp, Inc.  1995: started Oprah Online with AOL in partnership with ABC.  Two years later the Oprah Angel Network was formed.

23  Named the Women of Achievement by the National Organization of Women.  Won her first Emmy award in 1986.

24  Oprah Winfrey is still alive today.  She will always be remembered for being one of the first African-American women on television and always stood up for what she believed in.

27  They are both African-American women.  They were both abused sometime in their life.  They both accomplished many things throughout their life.

28  Parks was born in 1913 and Winfrey was born in 1954.  Parks is no longer alive, while Winfrey is still living.  Parks moved at a young age, while Winfrey stayed in the same place for quite awhile.
