2. Mexican American War Causes: Mexico still upset about Texas being a state---- Why: Still did not think the annexation was legal. Did not accept the Rio Grande as boundary----wanted Nueces R. as boundary (meant more land to Mexico) Westward expansion-----Mexico did not like it that the U. S. wanted Manifest Destiny to happen (Manifest Destiny: the belief that it was the God-given right of the U.S. to acquire all the land from “sea to shining sea”----from the Atlantic to the Pacific) Mexico refused to negotiate with the U. S. Americans were better trained and better equipped.

3. Lasted from 1846-1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo: ( a small Mexican town) Terms: 1. Mexico gave up all claims to Texas. 2. Mexico accepted the Rio Grande as the boundary. 3. Mexico surrendered the land to the U.S. all territory between West Tx. and the Pacific Ocean. (the Mexican Cession) 4. The U. S. paid Mexico $15 million and claims of American citizens against Mexico up to $3.5 million. 5. Mexican people guaranteed the right to U. S. citizenship living in the lost territory. Santa Fe wanted by both countries. (Santa Fe wanted to be its own territory.)

4. Pierce Act (Compromise of 1850: Terms: 1. U. S. agreed to pay $10 million to Tx. when Tx. agreed to surrender a part of the disputed land. 2. Gadsen Purchase: U. S. paid Mexico $10 million for this strip of land along The edges of New Mexico and Arizona

5. There are 3 Native American Reservations in Texas today: Alabama Coushatta, (East Texas) Tiguas (near El Paso) and Kickapoos (near Eagle Pass). Government Parties: Whig Party: Represented business and commercial interests. Democratic Party: Represented the farmers and laborers. Know-Nothing Party: Tried to keep new immigrants from voting or hold office.

6. Cash crop: Products sold to make money. Cotton was the number one cash crop in Texas. Subsistence crops: Food products that are eaten on the farm where they are grown. Pork was the most common meat in Texas.

7. European Texans came from Germany, Ireland and England. Homestead Act: Law protected a family’s home, tools and 50 acres of land from seizure for nonpayment of debts.
