The Five Year Plan By: Alex Kramer, Lauren Liebesman, Grace Eshenower, Gabby Gizzio, and Dominick Lombardi.

Thesis: The Five Year Plan was a success for Mao, for it allowed China to modernize independently, dramatically improve industry in a five year period, and it met it’s goals. 1.“Our revolutions are like battles; after each victory, we must put forward a new task,”-Theory of Economic Development, Mao speaking in 1958 2. “It will take many years to raise china from her low economic position, China must use elements of urban and rural capitalism which help the national economy. Our present policy is to control not eliminate capitalism.” –Mao speaking in the early 1950’s 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Thesis Rational The main goal of the 5 year plan was to improve the Chinese industry and economic development in a short five year period of time. The Chinese people, while being led by Mao, especially wanted to improve coal, steel, and oil. The plan to improve industry in China was a success and there was a high growth rate of 9% achieved during the time period. As well as a 9% rapid growth rate, most production targets were met. industry, especially heavy metal industry significantly improved in 5 years between 1952- 1957 Mao was able to modernize China without help from outside bordering countries and was able to accomplish the economic plans set. However, although there were many benefits to the five year plan, high targets that were set for production cost a lot of money and a lot of money was spent in making the five year plan a success.

Key 1. This quote reveals that communism is designed to be a constant revolution. In this quote states that they are always in a state of conflict producing a constant process of rebuilding developing and improving. Mao did this by introducing his 5 year plan. His 5 year plan was successful and help modernize China’s economy. 2.This quote reveals that China has such a bad economy that it will take years to fix it. Also this shows that they want to keep capitalism but want it controlled. Mao focused on big industries such as steel, coal, and chemicals when improving the economy using the five year plan. 3. The first picture signifies the schools that Mao wanted to build during the five year plan. When Mao was first coming into power, schools were being destroyed all throughout China. Mao wanted to rebuild the schools that had previously been damaged. He wanted schools to be strict and orderly with no mishaps. The five year plan allowed the country to built modern schools like the schools in the West. Mao and the five year plan had succeeded in the rebuilding challenge. 4. The second picture signifies how important coal was during the first five year plan. They used coal to industrialize and built everything using coal as power. During this however pollution became a very big problem in China because so much coal was being used and burned. That is also a major issue today in China with it being the most polluted area in the world. They sadly though had children working in the coal mines because they were so small and could get into little areas. Many children were harmed. This part of it was a success and also and negative because as it was benefitting China it was hurting them at the same time.

Key Continued 5. This picture conveys how the machinery producing industry forms the center of the abundant industry. The Five Year Plan was a success with Mao and the modernization of China. In the machinery producing industry, the peasants came into play, with the hard work with the flourishing industry. With the thriving production, more money was made and more peasants had jobs. Though Mao did choose to not use technology and have peasants do all of the work by hand, it was a success in the machinery producing industry. 6. This picture conveys how The Five Year Plan was a success with steel production. Mao knew that the heavy industry was in need of major reform. Mao’s goal in steel production in 1957 was 4.1 tonnes. The output was 5.8 tonnes. The steel industry was a huge asset to Mao’s success with The Five Year Plan. 7. This picture conveys how collectivization was used to obtain the goal of consolidating the individual land and labor into collective farms. This increased agricultural production. Unfortunately, the peasants were moved from the individual land and moved to live in one isolated place all together. Even though this was a huge asset to the succession of The Five Year Plan, it had some negatives along with the positives.
