1 The Cask of Amontillado

2 Summary The Cask of Amontillado is a tale about revenge. The Protagonist, Montresor, is out to punish his friend Fortunato for insulting him. Who is oblivious to his scheme, blinded by the pride he has for his expert judgment in wine. Comparing him to another expert in wine, Luchesi, Montresor lures Fortunato into his ancestors catacombs. Fortunato goes along determined to show his better judgment and expertise, almost too easily falling into Montresors plans to destroy him. Getting drunk put the situation even more into Montresors advantage and Fortunato was unaware of what was happening up to the point where he had been chained to the wall and Montresor was sealing him into a room, building a wall brick by brick with the trowel he had shown him earlier. After thinking it was all a joke, Montresor no longer hears anything from Fortunato on the other side of the wall. With one more stone to into place, he throws the torch in, the plasters the final brick. Fortunato left down in the catacombs undisturbed by no human for half a century.
