Qualification Plans for new Insulation Sources Daniel Dietderich

Present Procedure for Sleeve Insulation Receive 6-20m of sleeve from the start up of the run –Confirm that the insulation easily goes over the Teflon tube Easy hand packing of insulation over tube Cable can pass down the inside of the tube –Place sleeve on reference cable sections Evaluate sleeve coverage –Is the coverage good enough? Perform 10 stacks to determine sleeve thickness –Is it the thickness desired? Unusually ~0.100mm.

SV-12 (HQ) and SV-16 (HD) Insulation from NITIVY Co. Possible sleeves for replacing S-glass Japanese vendor: 72% Al 2 O 3 – 28 %SiO 2 –SV-12 sleeve has a diameter of 12 mm –This converts to a circumference of 37.7 mm. –HQ cable perimeter is: 2*(15 mm) + 2 (1.44) = 32.9 mm

SV-12 & SV-16 on HQ Cable

SV-12 Ten Stack HD3 Cable 997R

SV-16 Ten Stack HD3 Cable 997R

A & P Technology How to inspect a spool with 100-300 of sleeve? Braided Sleeve, 400' long; 0.588" diameter, 96-Carrier, S2 CG 150 1/2-1 end; 40-50 degree braid angle

Insulation Braided onto Cable How should an insulated cable be evaluated? –Re-spool and inspect the entire length for defects? Insulation De-cabled section – “Bump monitor” Perhaps 100m of cable could be inspected in 4 hours. –Wind coils and repair any bad sections as needed? Perhaps OK for coil R&D but not production LBNL is developing an imaging system to monitor cables during fabrication. –Perhaps this could be implemented for insulated cables At the vendors perhaps?
