A Whole Lot of Danger

 What are some things you chose for your flags?  Anything different from the videos we watched?

 Earthquakes  Volcanoes  Tsunamis  Oh my!

 An erupting volcano?  An earthquake?  A tsunami?  Take some time, talk with your neighbours about what you know about these events

 This region is lined with active volcanoes because of Fault Lines in the Earth  Earthquakes happen quite a bit due to the plates of the Earth shifting  Earthquakes can cause tsunamis when they happen in the ocean

 A very powerful, long earthquake hits Japan  8.9 on the Richter scale  The map shows all of the earthquakes, and aftershocks from the 11 th -13 th  Have you seen footage before? If not, you are about to

 Ever felt an earthquake before?  Any comparison with this one?  What is affected the most?  How are people reacting?

 Shortly after the earthquake finished, people were told to evacuate  The government knew a tsunami was coming  Not always the case with earthquakes, but in this case...yeah

 What is happening?  Where are people going for safety?  What do you think clean- up would be like?  What would you rather experience?

 Mountains are pretty!  They go really high, they tend to be covered in awesome forests  Good for hiking!  So many great times can be had thanks to mountains!

 This is when mountains are less fun  Volcanoes are nice looking too, but require distance when actually doing their thing  Here is some more footage!

 All of these things can make Japan a dangerous place to live at times  But it also makes it great to explore and sight-see  Can you imagine Burnaby looking as nice without mountains?

 Should be able to finish this before the end of class  Will be due next class (Monday)  Try to finish it now because there’s more to do for the weekend....

 A half page written assignment!  You get to choose which type of disaster it is on  As long as it happens in Japan, and relates to its geography  Due next Wednesday

 What are some of the major natural disasters related to the geography of Japan?  What is the area that includes both Japan and Vancouver called?  What causes many of these disasters to occur?
