7 Good & Bad News Alcohol use doubles from 8th to 12th grade 8th graders aren’t in to meth & heroin Instead, 11% are using inhalants Meth use cut in half since 204 RX Drug use is rampant across the board Ecstasy is back on the scene High alcohol, cigarettes, inhalants & Rx: they are targeting what is available, easy to get and cheaper

8 Alcohol Abuse Rates... Why does this happen? Social & parental acceptance/culture of legal drug abuse Low perception danger/harm/risk Lowering age for gateway use, ±12 Peers & community Availability

9 Alcohol or Drug Abuse What to do? Drug conversations reduce chance of first use or abuse by 50% Be firm & loving, don’t yell Insist your teen acknowledges the value of telling the truth If you have proof teen is lying, bring it up Focus on behavior & why it worries you Focus on your concern for their health Set clear consequences for actions Reward honesty

11 Medical Marijuana: How will it affect us? Minors can be MM cardholders with 2 recommendations & parental permission Schools can not discriminate against card holders for admission or employment Cardholders can come to school, work under the influence of MM Cardholders can not be prosecuted for having metabolites in the body while in class or at work MM minor users can use during the school day, 500 yards off campus without penalty Cardholders entitled to 5 oz/mo ±400 joints Exposure to other children, bus drivers Schools need to follow federal Drug Free School rules

13 What to do? Ask if any of their friends are using legal or illegal drugs Have the general drug TALK with your kids/grandkids/neighbor kids Be aware of strange products and smells in the kids’ rooms/backpacks A child has to think you care before he cares what you think!
