2 F OR ALL THOSE WHO DON ’ T KNOW WHAT JAZZ IS …… “Jazz” is a broad term that incorporates many musical styles (blues, swing, ragtime, bop, funk ect). “Jazz” is a soulful music derived from traditional African music, which turned into gospel, then ragtime and blues and then into jazz The “Big Band” and jazz developed from ragtime in the early 1900’s, when white people got more involved. Played a lot of swing! Swing is usually bright, playful, and upbeat. It is full of expression and tension/release. This made swing the perfect pick me up music after WWI. It was party music. Interestingly, Jazz was pretty consistently varied during the depression.

3 J AZZ IN THE 20’ S : S WING Duke Ellington and his Band. Billy Strayhorn (Ellingtons writer) wrote a lot of swing, and is often associated with “Big Band” and swing during the depression The song, “Black and Tan Fantasy” debued in 1927.

4 O THER IMPORTANT E ARLY J AZZ A RTISTS : Jelly Roll Morton Nick LaRocca – insisted jazz was exclusively a white creation Bix Beiderbecke Benny Goodman – brought big band swing to whole country (music born in black community) Billie Holiday – distinctive singing style turned mediocre music into great art Charlie Parker Miles Davis – new sound made him most influential musician of his generation Louis Armstrong – helped turn jazz into a soloist’s art, highly influential

5 I MPORTANT CITIES Jazz was the music of the cities, and of the north. Because of the roots of jazz in Black culture, it was a place where blacks and whites worked together. New Orleans Often referred to as the “birth place” of jazz Chicago New York
