Carrie Hall, M.Ed. Lisa Milkavich, PT, DPT Margaret Kluthe, M.D. Tracy, Golden, Ph.D., M.Ed. URLEND Leadership Research Project: Utilizing the Learn the Signs, Act Early program to Teach WIC clients in Provo County about Healthy Child

 GOAL: Promote earlier identification of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Developmental Delays.  MEANS: Increase parents’ ability to recognize signs of delay and seek evaluation.  Method: Create learning modules for the WIC website.

 Rationale: only ~ 30% of children with delays are identified before they enter school. ◦ Relying on periodic physical exams is insufficient. ◦ Recognition of delays among some groups is lower, including  Girls  African American children  Children of parents who were not fluent in English  Children in foster care  Early intervention allows earlier therapy. ◦ Early therapy is more efficacious.

 We contacted WIC to arrange an in-person meeting in early November  We researched the efficacy of modules  We created learning modules for ages 6, 12 and months and ages 2, 2½ and 3 years  Modules, utilized the CDC “Learn the Signs. Act Early” curriculum with ◦ Introduction ◦ Pretest ◦ Informational section ◦ Resources ◦ Post test

Team’s goals: Develop culturally & socioeconomically relevant educational modules on developmental milestones & autism. Barriers: 1)Significant delays in communications, 2)Rotating contact person for WIC, 3)WIC seemed to lose track of who we were Data collection: No data was collected.

Limitation:  Unable to publish modules on WIC’s website  No collect data, no findings in relation to original hypothesis Future direction:  Post on ‘Help me Grow' -United Way program in Utah County & LTA-AE’s user board Outcomes:  Experience working with a large government organization  Team developed- culture of trust, and open communication, cohesive work environment across disciplines, & experienced modern communication technologies

 Suggestions and highlights: ◦ Include future AE trainee’s in the orientation process to allow networking and connection with other trainees ◦ Set up a requirement for projects within government systems ◦ Create more opportunities for the URLEND and AE trainees to attend seminars together ◦ Keep the Leadership Assignments-they were great!

URLEND is my professional utopian bubble Suggestions:  Add a quick 5 min update/debrief period to beginning of each AE didactic session  New assignment tab on syllabus is great! Can you add the actual assignment to the page as well?  Interprofessional reading/assignments from Gwen were great. Can they all be placed on the syllabus at the beginning of the course? Can leadership groups receive group feedback after assignment B?

 Highlights ◦ Leadership project with Lisa & Carrie was a great experience at learning to collaborate as a group. ◦ Leadership book was clear and insightful. ◦ Loved the clinics – just wish I had time to do more. ◦ Didactic sessions were excellent!  Suggestions ◦ Support all AE trainees attending the orientation for team building and collaboration. ◦ Have a ‘Legislative’ tab where legislative activities could be listed and updated, whenever possible. ◦ Include Dr. Hoffman’s lecture for AE, perhaps all. ◦ Fewer assignments due April 4 th ! (We have five due)
